Question about getting a visa - 02-21-2010, 04:55 AM

Hello folks

At July 1st, I will set my sail to japan and was wondering what for options someone from a foreign country has mainly with jobs

I heard from some friends of mine (currently one is somewhere near tokyo) that it isnt really bad to work part time as... (I probably know what for replys come) teacher at junior / high school there ;o of course when you have chances to get another one it is better, but I would be glad to hear some advices as an aspect to be prepared ;o at least

Let me get this straight...you are going to Japan without a work visa, and want to get a job?

The general strategy is to get the job, get the visa, and then go with nothing to worry about.

Since you won't have a work visa, legally no company can hire you. Now, you can get a job in certain industries, i.e. hosting, bartending, construction, etc. but in my experience getting a teaching job will be very difficult.

EDIT:

Are you from Germany? Getting a job teaching English for a German will be that much harder.

I am not familiar with that visa, do you mean the Working Holiday Visa?

If so, I don't think teaching will be your vocation. Chances are you will be doing more temporary work in a restaurant or hotel, if what I hear is true.

Hmhm
WORK AND TRAVEL in Japan | WORK & TRAVEL Japan 2010 It seems like it is the Working Holiday Visa you mentioned

Is a Visa for German citizens offered for many other countries but Japanese isnt supported yet, that explains my question about jobs etc...

isnt supported means that there isnt any guideance as for america or canada for example where you get everything planned etc.

And im completly fine with working at hotels or somewhat else o,o im even learning japanese bit for bit since nov. 09 progressed well for now

I don't speak German, so that link doesn't help me.

The Japanese Working Holiday Visa is available for Canadians, but not for Americans, which is why I am not so familiar with the details.

Whether or not it is available for Germans is beyond me.

However, as a German I am sure getting a job as an English teacher will be difficult in Japan...no matter how skilled you may be in English.

I will pass off on making any more comments, as I just don't know many more details....

You can be placed as a teacher with a WHV. The problem is that the WHV usually isn't long enough for an entire contract period. In addition, you will be interviewed by Boards of Education and/or the schools in question. Sometimes both. You can be nixed at that point. It may not be right, once it is determined you are not from an English speaking country and did not attend school in English, the BoEs or the schools might well refuse to give you the nod.

While your written English may not be a true indicator of your spoken English ability, it would certainly give me pause as a recruiter/private company HR manager when evaluating your fitness to serve even in the capacity as a conversational instructor or an assistant English teacher. The Japanese are, from my experience, very sensitive about proper pronunciation, and more often than not, are specifically interested in what I call broadcast voice, or Standard American Accent. What you would hear listening to Katie Couric or Dan Rather.

I consistently get complimented for how clear my English is- what most people don't realise is... I'm a Texan, who took journalism courses and studied diction. It isn't my natural voice (which Japanese people can't understand at all!). It's merely emulating the standards of the American media. I found other Americans from certain areas have a hard time being as clear as the Japanese would like them to be, and British/Australian/Kiwi/South African accents are considered less desirable (not that a Japanese person will tell you that to your face).

If French Canadians who work with me have a tough time, despite growing up in an English speaking country, and going to school partially in English, who are completely bilingual have a tough time convincing Japanese co-teachers they are competent in the language, I imagine a German would have a pretty hard time.

You ask to be "back to topic" but you will get better answers if you ask crystal clear questions.
