when i first heard about the china's one-child policy, my first reaction is just like you.

then i met real chinese people, and through our discussion, it was obvious that the policy is much needed in a big country like china. it's whether the one child policy, or china separated into various countries for easier governance.

the thing is, they also spoke about rural families taking medication so that when a mother gave birth, she would gave birth to as many children as possible, because it is OK to have multiple children, as long as they came during the same birth. pills to make quadruplets were widely use, because rural families need several strong sons to help them with their farm etc.

the importance of having a son is also significant, as the son is going to bear the family name, and since the wife is going to be with her husband, the family with only one daughter is left with no one to take care of them when their daughter is wed off.

it has been like... 20 years? since they implement the policy, and i'm very interested to know to what extent the impact has been to china, socially and economically.

is it a successful policy?
