I just went through this with friends heading home to Japan wanting to take home SMALL souvenirs Wednesday. We ended up an handfuls cell phone charms, postacards, and key chains with Texas flags, Longhorns and Armadillos on them.

One of the Americans with us who had gone to school there kept trying to convince everyone we should grab lots of typical American foods and candies, but the idea didn't go over well with either of the two Japanese. There is also a question of customs. Does Japan not restrict what foods a private individual can bring into the country? Sure candy is probably ok, but what about meats, fruits and vegetables? Everywhere I have traveled in the Western hemisphere those are usually strictly regulated.
