It's not a cultural thing. Just a lack of planning on your part. Contact the original owner immediately and tell him the truth and ask him what he would like you to do: give the kitten back to him, find a home for it, take it to Animal Control Center...
Give the original owner a chance to decide what he would like to see done. Things happen to everyone, it's the follow thru that's important.
