On another note, I've just seen how much a JR rail pass costs! That's mighty expensive for the 3 of us! Will we really be spending that much money circling the yamanote line a few times and a few short trips out? Wow.

When you refer to a short trips out, what do you mean? I'd only get the pass if you're going to Kyoto and back or if you're doing trips to Nikko and back
and Nagano and back, etc. If you're just going to Nikko and Yokohama for example, it's not worth it.
