I normally avoid shounen genres, like Naruto or One Piece, for obvious reasons. Character design doesn't really have anything to do with genre (unless it's chibi or something), so I judge according to plot. At the same time, I'm pretty open-minded, I don't decide to dislike something unless I've already seen it and know what it's about and have a reason not to like it.

Anything having to do with romance or relationships. Hints of romance make things interesting, but when all a story revolves around is a relationship, it drives me up a wall.

I avoid Hentai and other explicit genres, as well as Yaoi and Yuri. Pointlessly stupid anime doesn't captivate me either. Other than that, I am very open and willing to try anything. I give most anime a chance.
