What did you want to be when you were a child? And did you achieve it?

Almost everyone has had a childhood dream job, whether it be a police man, a fire fighter, or a dustbin cleaner (each to their own :P). But as people get older it seems that the dream job will remain a dream... basically what I wanted to ask is what was YOUR childhood dream job? And whether or not you've been able to fulfill it (working in the same field).

I personally wanted to become an actor (and still do!) but as I've got older I was released to the harsh realities I would have to overcome to achieve my goal (the risk of being a failed actor and other such possibilities). And although now my dream was somewhat less passionate than it once was, it is all I've REALLY wanted to do... I didn't achieve a desirable grade in drama at GCSE level so I dropped it and took the absolute converse subjects (3 math subjects and Enlglish literature (this subject isn't actually too far off) at A-level)... I've got a little over a year before I will head off to uni and end up studying a subject between maths and physics, which almost makes my dream seem unattainable. I've tried to convince myself, despite what I will study in the future that I will have a chance to still do my dream job, and have my degree in whatever I study as a back up plan. So if I do fail in acting (I know, not a good mentality to have!) I will always be able to get a decent job with something else...

But what I really want to do is read your about others dreams and whether or not you have achieved it... or if indeed you have a found a job which is better for you?

I wanted to be a beauty therapist..lol. And I currently dont have a job, but I might take a look into beauty therapy...its the kind of job I wouldnt hate doing. x] Unless I had to shave someones legs...

CrazyLee 03-01-2008 12:17 PM

Wanted to be a scientist. I liked science. Unfortuneately life didn't go the way I'd planned...so i've ben studying accounting instead. Still, its a good choice. If I could only get a job in it...

EveV 03-01-2008 12:26 PM

I wanted to a rock star without the fame.
I just wanted people to focus on my music not me.
It sorta but sorta didn't happen.

I also wanted to be a astronaut..u.u
Didn't happen.

Wanted to build robots.
Could happen , hasn't yet.

Wanted to be a music teacher
That happened in a sense. My school lets me teach a class after school.

Anddd I wanted to open a big cat sanctuary.
Didn't really happen.

But hey , I still have some time to be all the things I want to be.
I'm not freaking out.

xYinniex 03-01-2008 12:30 PM

I wanted to be a doctor
I'm not smart enough >.>

I also wanted to be a farmer
But i didn't want to be throwing pig shit about.

I want to be in management/PR
I'm studying to get a degree in history which is a versatile subject because it measn you are supposed to be good at management and analysis.

=D

clairebear 03-01-2008 12:35 PM

A farmer? hahah..I didnt expect that coming from you. XD

xYinniex 03-01-2008 12:39 PM

Thunda 03-01-2008 02:28 PM

I wanted to be paleontologist...but I suck at chemistry. U_U

NishiHime 03-01-2008 02:36 PM

I wanted to be a detective like Nancy Drew but because detectives make no money, I wound up becoming an attorney. ;) I enjoy being an attorney (some days) but my real passions are writing fiction and singing/songwriting and I'm slowly trying to make my dreams of writing full-time and having a singing career come true. I also love international affairs and archaeology and want to go to Archaeology school in London and go back to grad school to get a masters in IA and Policy.

But its not my job..mine is to use them.

Osamukundesu 03-01-2008 02:56 PM

I'm mildly offended by questioning the importance of maths! :). I can only agree with you that number theory has no relative use in the practicle world...

Aside from this, I'm happy that many of you have shared your stories! It's a shame that it just isn't so easy to become what you want... I'm quite surprised that quite a few of you wanted to be archaeologists, never sprung to mind...

koaku 03-01-2008 03:06 PM

Everything we use today is the result of a study more or less mathematical .. not only electronics but the advantage of maths is that almost all the problems can be solved ...Im in Bioinformatics at the university lol ... and I am not a big fan of math ...

Heh...I do hate maths. I prefer languages and psychology. Verbal things. Not questioning facts and make up theorys and explain them with weird numbers.

Shiningmonkey 03-01-2008 03:13 PM

I wanted to be an artist and I'm on my way there.

Kiyuge 03-01-2008 03:14 PM

hehe, I guess I also enjoy languages and till an extent psychology... but I'm not any good at them and have no real knowledge on those subjects, but loads of my friends take such subjects so we talk about it sometimes, quite fun stuff...

The part I can't agree with you is when you say "questioning facts and make up theorys and explain them with weird numbers." ... I want to know which facts we actually question? And if they are indeed facts we wouldn't try disprove them! Further more if the math is correct and makes sense, which can be displayed as 'weird numbers' then we didn't 'make' the theories, we just discovered them... we can't make REAL math up! (just discover it!)

Also I'm glad Shiningmonkey you are achieving your goal! Good stuff! :) :vsign:

Hazuki 03-01-2008 03:26 PM

Wanted to be Indiana Jones for some reason haha! Actually went so far that I got some tools for cutting rock and start looking for hidden treasures in the mountains and the forests. My mom was a bit worried for a while when she discovered me high up in a tree in a cowboy hat and leader boots :D

I always dreamt I'd be a computerman.. I've become him. I'm married to my job and I can't do anything else. So I lost a very good position at Exxon Mobile. It was very high paid but it's really for dummies to send emails and mix pappers. I said "Fuck off I'm an engineer" and went away.

Juno 03-01-2008 04:31 PM

I always wanted to be an artist or musician and im both yay!
Still have to choose which schools to send portfolios too though,
this is when my dream job seems like a pain in the ass.
:D

Suki 03-01-2008 04:51 PM

I wanted to be so many different things as a child, I'd change every week or so: a vet, an astronaut, a hairdresser, an actress, a cook, a teacher, a nurse, etc. The kinda things little girls see themselves as. I made up my mind when I was about 10, and that's still the option I'm going with.

I remember always wanting to be a vet at the zoo near my town. Then I realized I hate blood...
So that one didn't happen.

In third grade the teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I said "Can I be a fish?"
That one still hasn't happened either.

Currently I want to do something with music, teaching, or business. Kinda broad there.
Maybe I'll be able to do one of them. :)

Lucyenn 03-01-2008 06:04 PM

Strange but i wanted to be a truckdriver :DDD

Cyasarin 03-01-2008 06:12 PM

ZOMG, the first thing I wanted to be when I was about 3 was a violinist....And now look at me!!! I'm in STRINGS class playing my own VIOLIN!!!! <333 GO ME!!! I seriously would love to play in an orchestra one day...but just as a hobby. I don't really want a career out of it.

Then I wanted to be a singer around the same time...but I never felt like I would ever get my shot so I'm still waiting on a band to come by and hire me...I did get an offer last year! But the thing was postpone and the band sort of broke up. That dream is still somewhat in my head.

The next thing I wanted to be when I was super little was a firefighter...I loved fire and I thought it was for me, but then I started getting uninterested in it...It just didn't appeal to me anymore. Plus, I'd probably let everyone that I was supposed to save die. =P

Then I wanted to be a lawyer....but then I decided that I didn't want to know all that stuff.

Then I wanted to be a herpetologist..I love snakes and I wanted to work with them. But I can't finish my labs in science so how am I going to finish labs in real life work?

Then I wanted to be an artist. I was drawing by the time I was three [very well] and then I was looking into that career major...then I was like, I don't want to spend all day drawing a picture. Cause I get bored easily when I draw or paint or whatever.

And now, I want to be either a photographer, fashion designer or model. I love pictures, but I also want to design my own clothes...and I love being in front of a camera lens, too. So, I'm still contemplating that career choice...On my IGP [individual grade plan] it says I want to major in photography/fashion designing.
