I'm not sure if there's anything to be proud of, when it comes to my country...

This is why Scottish people have Atlantic Canadian provinces to be proud of.

Is this a new trend? And if I may ask, why?

wolf_requiem 08-01-2009 06:23 AM

After living in Japan for a year I couldn't wait to get back to American lifestyle. There's so much freedom in choices, you really don't know what you have until you don't have it anymore. I appreciate it more now. However, there are things in Japan that I wish America had more of, like a sense of community and respect towards others. America is so focused on individuality that it forgets about connecting with others. At least, that's what I find where I live anyways. I really need to get out of the south, the crazy religious people scare me o_o (sorry if there are crazy religious people on here...) I think I would do well in California, lol

mitsuki18 08-03-2009 12:17 AM

Am I proud of my country?
No, I'm not proud of the Netherlands, not as it is right now.

Sblegach 08-03-2009 12:28 AM

No I hate america >_>

LuckyLuck 08-03-2009 12:45 AM

First I'd like to say that being proud of your country doesn't necessarily mean to be proud of your countries government. It means to be proud of the traditions and overall culture of your people. Saying you're not proud of your country is like saying you're not proud of who you are because the society within your country is what influenced who you are today.
I'm very proud of Lebanon. ( I'm a Lebanese mix but I was born and raised there a majority of my life. )
I'm also very proud to live in America, I do miss home but I enjoy American culture and the diversity and freedoms found here.
That's right, I said it, I'm proud of america, deal with it. :)

hah just realized I already replied to this. Oh well! Opinions change.

VIKTORY 08-03-2009 12:53 AM

I live in Denmark and yes I think I'm proud of "my" country.
Or at least happy with it ^^
The weather sucks most of time but the way the country works is great I think. There's extremely little poverty and crime, and things like school, education and doctors are free. And if you lose your job, the state will pay for you until you can get back on your feet without you having to pay back. An easy country to live in :rheart:
I would not say that I'm proud of the culture though. Not that it is bad, sick or something like that. It's just kinda boring :P

It's clearly unpopular to like America. If you don't like it here, then just go. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

RegPaq 08-03-2009 02:01 AM

i love my country (America), but sadly, Obama is ruining it...

Misread it lol.

Anyway, now that I get what you mean...
I think a lot of people dislike america..who live in america because it's a unique opinion in the outside world, and a fine opinion... if they can back it up, which most for some reason really can't... do that, so it doesn't make much sense for them to loathe their own country in the first place...it's very unappreciative.

I said nothing about liking or disliking this forum.
Wow.. someone has anger issues...

I don't think they were disagreeing with you.

It's not as simple packing up your bags and leaving my friend.

Exactly..thats what people dont understand. If I could, I would be out of this place. But I cant right now. I have college to go it before I can really leave anyways. So I'm pretty much stuck here in America, the land of Coke and French Fries until that happens.

I was talking to a person at school a while back about why I dislike the country and apperantly he didn't like what I had to say about it, because once I was dont speaking he pretty much gave me look of Satan and said "If you dont mother-******* like it here, pack your **** and GTFO, now."

MMM 08-03-2009 02:17 AM

I know I don't like Hunt's ketchup because I have had Hunt's ketchup and I have had Heinz ketchup and I know I like Heinz better.

That being said, I don't know if I would say "I don't like Hunt's ketchup" if that is the only ketchup I have ever had before. I would probably say "I don't like ketchup."

Well part of what he's saying is .. how can you hate your country if you haven't even really lived outside of it?

He is reffering to catsup brands as countries.

Saying that if the USA is the only one you've "had" before. That you should say "I dont like life/society" instead of, I dont like the USA.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this one MMM

Hah you're much better at interpretation then me lol.

MMM 08-03-2009 02:29 AM

You both are right. I don't spend a lot of time thinking about loving or not loving the USA, but you read here time and time again about how people appreciate their home country so much more after living some place else (in this case, Japan, but it could be anywhere, I suppose).

You get a different perspective that will, without fail, change the way you think about your home country.

That is why I don't think people who have never lived (and I mean "lived") outside of their home country can say "I hate it" because you have nothing to compare it to.

You can say you don't agree with the government or don't like certain things, of course, but I would reserve saying "I hate the USA" before you know anything besides the USA.

I understand that. It's simply infuriating to read "I hate America" from Japan obsessed teenagers who don't appreciate the freedoms we have that many others don't.

I live in Arizona where there are (I'm not justifying illegal immigration) countless hispanics who risked their lives for a better one. I have many Mexican friends who love this country for the priveleges they have even when some are not as financially able as many on this forum clearly are.

alanX 08-03-2009 02:36 AM

Oh I understand.

I've lived in Australia and Japan.
And Canada. (Kind of)

I can still say I don't really have a liking for America.

You obviously don't know me.
I absolutely love the freedom that we have in America, I'm very blessed to live in a country as such.

This doesn't mean I like America.

So having said that, should I take my statement and change it to "I hate -insert long list of things I hate about America-"?
