I've been a vegetarian for about 10 years, now. When I move out I am going to move up to veganism.

I have not met one person who is veg*n. It is awfully lonely, sometimes. :/
But I go to VeggieBoards - Vegetarian Forum - Blogs , full of veg*ns, and that makes it a little less lonely. xD

I love dead cows... Yum.

I wouldn't consider an unhealthy lifestyle like that a step up. Cows need to be milked. Bees don't cry when we take their honey. And leather feels so nice :D Vegans tend to be so self-righteous...

Besides, by that logic, the next step up is fruitarianism. Yay, rotten fruit and you die when you're 35!

Vegetarianism... I've never seen a vegetarian tiger or eagle or bear. I guess they're wiser than us in many ways xD

Again, we agree on so many levels!

hi AngelRage :) I'm not entirely a vegetarian (I love salmon, shrimp chicken, pork & beef too much to give them up) but I do stick to a generally large vegetable diet with soy & tofu based products for health reasons. More and more we read about how diets rich in animal-based products aren't healthy and it should be on a moderate scale with most of our diet composed of fruits and vegtables. Here in the U.S. we're heavy on the beef and pork and chicken and not so good about filling up on veggies.

I'm so sorry that anyone would say something so cruel as calling you anorexic - that's beyond messed up.

An interesting fact is that people who eat a lot of animal proteins (like beef) tend to be more angry & aggressive people and health gurus blame it on the animal hormones within the meat.

You're better off than most of us I think because of your choice to be vegetarian. Have you checked out VegWeb.com or VegCooking.com ? The latter has an awesome video on Spinach-Asparagus wraps that looks sooooo good :)

Hi Angel!

I am also a veggie eater (vegan). Have been for the last 9 years.
I must say that I havent had much problems with people beeing ignorant or mean. I mean, there is always a few, but the majority is just like "ok, cool, how come" and so on. I usally dont make a big deal about it if people dont attack me (like what seems to happen here).

Im not a vegan cuz of health reasons (animal rights) but it's usally one of the benefits of beeing a veggie. Alot of people might say that "that type of diet dosent suit me" and "I got sic when not eating meat". Usally, those people didnt do their homework about veggie cooking. And sure, it dosent suit EVERYONE. But what does?

Seems like people get offended when you tell them you dont eat meat. I dont know why, but Im guessing they might feal guilty or something along those line, who knows...

I'm going to Tokyo in about 4 months and there are alot of veggie places I'm going to eat at! :happybunny:

Gwen_Goth 01-20-2009 12:48 PM

Hmm...

apparently I've never posted in this one before..

I too am Vegetarian :ywave:

Why? well; i always have been; since conception; my parents are vegetarian and although they do eat fish (i now there's a specific name for that type of veggie; but i cant remember it right now...) They have never forced vegetarianism on me; i was always given a choice, but i like being veggie... I don't eat fish (something to do with the little mermaid when i was 8 apparently) , but i will have things with gelatine in (although i prefer Agar).

I don't have any particular beliefs about not killing animals for food (although I'd prefer that if we d kill animals, at least use the majority of the body for other uses as well; like native americans did); nor do i have any problems with touching, preparing or cooking meat.

I work in a cafe / resturant so i handle meat all the time; I live with my BF and a housemate who both eat meat, which i cook for them (like i'm letting them burn the house down).
this Xmas i even cooked; one shoulder of lamb, a of beef and a whole duck for them... some of it was a little gross... (i don't like meat on the bone much still) but it's ok now.

my basic mantra is; I'll prepare it, handle it and even cook it for you, but i just wont eat it.

so may (22) years of never eating meat (14 without fish) mean that if i do accidentally have meat i tend to get rather bad stomach cramps and /or vomiting.
I'll stick to the broccoli :p

[don't get me started on Quorn products; they're gross]

I;m getting ever so tired of threads that are 'i'm vegetarian, if you're veggie too, let's be friends'

I don't just befriend people on what they eat.

BUT, amongs many veggies there is a common...Appraisal? Is it the right word?

two friends would be friends regardless of what they like to eat.

asking for friends because they are vegetarian seems a little pathetic to me.

Seems narrow-minded to me.

cuz animal rights and vegetarianism are two different things.

Gwen_Goth 01-20-2009 02:45 PM

Hmm; I'd have to agree that trying to base an friendship; or any other relationship for that matter on diet alone is a little naive..

Ehh; I only post to try to enlighten others that there is more than one reason that people are vegetarian :)

I don't like it when other veggies try to stop people from eating meat because they don't; it's like some one else trying to make me eat meat because they do; it just doesn't work...

it's why organisations like the Vegetarian Society piss me off; they force it down your throat (no pun intended)

Ofcourse, and yes, it's very narrow-minded to be frinds just cuz of what you eat. But thats not what I mean. When you "look" for a friend you might like someone who thinks more like yourself n such. Its also a good topic to start a conversation on and so on and so forth. You might look for some common ground. I have MANY friends who eat meat, majority in fact, its not like that.
I probably wouldnt talk to you if I saw you walking down the street, but I am talking to you now since we share a common intrest, Japan, right? :vsign:

Blackmariah 01-23-2009 08:48 PM

I'm a vegetarian, and it's sometimes a major pain in the ass. My sister still laughs at me when I remind her that I won't join her for a burger because I believe it's wrong to eat other living creatures, especially ones that have probably been mistreated and given all kinds of hormones and stuff to faten them up. Hang in there.

MilliPanda 01-27-2009 12:11 PM

"if you don't eat meat, what do you eat?" is the classic question you get when telling people that you're a vegetarian/vegan.
I've been a vegetarian for 10 years and every time I sit down with my family for dinner I still get the same crap about my lifestyle.
In the beginning you just don't care, but when you hear the same thing over and over again every time you sit down to eat with someone you get pretty tired.
Why is it so difficult for some people to just accept that not everyone makes the same choices, be it eating habits, religion, sexual orientation, clothing style etc.?
F*** social norms!

pumpum 01-28-2009 08:26 AM

ill be honest veggies just piss me off - not just randomly but when your with a group of friends and u go to the local takeaway or something and everyone has the same thing and then ONE person asks for something vegetarian and BLAM everyone else's food goes cold while waiting for the vegetarian shit to be cooked. I hate that. i reckon being vegetarian and attention seeking are quite closely aligned.

Mikachii2202 01-28-2009 11:16 PM

alright ima " veg head" as my friends would call me. i absolutley hate meat its gross. well i hated eating meat and once i grew up i never ate it after going to a chicken factory in china. i feel you pain my friends think im anorexic too . im just like dont hate me cause im skinny :mtongue: . im not like a hippy just cause i dont eat meat.. trust me far from it.

ThirdSight 01-29-2009 05:20 PM

I don't know why I find the first few posts humorous, but I do.

My best buddy is a vegitarian. His reason is because he simply doesn't like the taste of most meats; he'll eat a bit, but not most. Good, healthy, life-preserving decision with a good enough explanation for me to discern that he's not being an idiot.

But perhaps the main reason why others give vegitarians a hard time is because a lot, not all or most, but a lot, of vegitarians are vegitarians because it's a popular thing to do, or rather popular because it's "different". Instead of eating what they like and being happy about it, they label themselves in order to stand out and seek attention. For the most part, some people are just turned off to meat, to which there is absolutly no problem so long as you state it as such; making your personal dieting habits a main source of drama in your life is only asking for those around you to agree to the fact that you're either a moron or have very little else of importance to concern yourself with.

That, and most vegitarians who can't give a good enough answer to their life choices can't give a good enough answer to some questions "meat-eaters" have for them:
- Incizers. Why else do we have them?
- Is looking slightly pale, due to the fact that you eat nothing but veggies, a healthy life-perserving decision?
- Evolutionary theory shows that most herbavores aren't high up on the evolutionary food chain; humans seem to be pretty near the top of it. Explain this contingency.

If you are a healthy vegetarian then good for you, I have vegetarian friends, and all is good, we sit, eat ,sometimes I pic from their plates but the conversation is almost never about the food or eating habits, I know, they know, so there is no need to make a big deal about it.
but when we talk about it i just dont get it,
I understand a person that eats mostly vegetables for the variety of flavors, I don't undestand vegetarians,
humans are omnivorous and we should take advantage of it to keep ourselves healty,if you don't like meat from a big slaughter house for the way they treat the animals, eat animals grown naturaly,
it's the same with the veggies and the fertilizers and all the other stuff that they put into them.
those are some of the things i like to point out, but is their decition.
so dont make a big deal about it and some day try a realy good seasoned salmon. it's delitious.

Hi all

I have been vegetarian all my life and it has been always like that not only in your country but everywhere.
There is one difference. Now, this is a multi-billion dollar industry and for good. People now is so much more open minded than when I became vegetarian. Back then, it was like you belonged to some kind of weird sect or something. Now, it is getting more and more into the society. It is an explosion. So many young people want to be vegetarian. If you want famous people who are vegetarians, you can find many of them like Leonardo Di Caprio, Madonna, Clint Eastwood, Prince Charles of England, John Denver, John Lennon, etc. President Obama is pretty vegetarian friendly as well. You can find natural food stores on every corner. There is a green revolution taking place now in the US and that will define the future of the United States for generations (organic farming, natural health, alternative energies, etc). When the establishment in Washington DC gets interested, you can bet it will be a big impact worldwide.

Japanese natural traditional cooking is very vegetarian friendly. They are not vegetarians but pretty close.

Once, when I was younger, I dated a Japanese lady for the first time. I told her I was vegetarian. Then, she asked me if I was vegetarian because I didnt have money to buy meat.

A lot have changed since those times. People still make fun but so much less. Now is mainstream.

If you have questions, you can ask me anything.
