Eyelids?
My husbands best friend is from Taiwan and he always complains about how his mom makes him do "eye exercises" to try and make his eyes more open looking. Apparently his mom even complains if they're watching a movie and one of the actors doesn't have eyes that are wide enough and so then she says she doesn't like that actor/actress because of their eyes. His dad also just recently got a surgery done to get a fold in his eyelids. I had seen a documentary a few years ago about a girl who used to use double sided tape on her eyelids to give them that fold. The documentary didn't really explain much aside from the girl saying that she hated her eyes and felt ugly and never wanted to be seen without the tape on her eyes, and how all her other friends do it too.
So my question is, what exactly happened that caused eyelids/eyes to be such a big deal? What caused this feeling of needing a fold to be pretty and having wide eyes to look good? Also, when did this start? At what point in history and why exactly is it still such a big deal? Is it more of an older generation thing? My husbands friend doesn't really seem to care about eyes at all and finds his mom rather annoying. I think that people can be just as beautiful without folds on their eyelids as they can be with them. Same goes for small eyes vs. big eyes. I just don't see anything ugly about it. I'm just curious to understand so if I've said anything offensive or made any kind of unwarranted generalizations, I'm very sorry. |
I think it's absolutely shameful to hear such a thing.
I think it's a matter of personal preference, but you should not change the way your eyes look. Why would you want to do that? To hide the fact that they are Asian or something? I find the "common" Asian appearance extremely beautiful and attractive. I also have almond shaped eyes. And I'm glad I do, but if I didn't have almond shaped eyes, it would not have bothered me. It's just the way we are. Like I said: shameful and disrespectful to nature. |
I also find Asians to be beautiful. I love the way their eyes look, whether they're small, wide, without a fold, or with a fold. I think it's very sad that having almond shaped eyes can be such a negative thing to some people and I just don't understand what brought this way of thinking about and what's causing it to continue for some.

I don't understand it. However they are, fold or no fold, etc. It's all beautiful to me.

I wish my eyes were bigger >__>

I like my eyes....but my hair.....is ridiculous >_<
|
Imo, i think that you should accept how you look.Learn to love your body and attributes for what they are.

What are these folds you're talking about anyhow???

I do believe that your query is generalizing towards Asian feelings, although I do not believe the "eyelid" scenario affects most, but rather the more insecure of not feeling happy what you were born with. As for me, I've never taken any notice of my lids and have always been more focussed on my toe nails. |
OH. SINGLE EYELIDS as opposed to double eyelids.
Basically, the lid folds over to give your eyes so your eyes have less dimension. apparently a majority of asians have it. It's a beauty thing, my grandma wants it done, purely because it gets droopy with old age and just drops over her eyes. actually, only asian women are concerned, in asia, double eyelids are seen as beautiful, i think purely because what they can't have they want. |

Is there a problem to posting such a query on a public forum when no names were used? Plus, what he said got me thinking. It wasn't the first time I've heard eyelids talked about and I thought this would be a great place to post the question. I'll be seeing his friend tomorrow and plan on asking him any ways but I was curious to what everyone else had to say on the subject. His opinion on it is only one persons and I'd like more then that to help answer my question.

I remember reading about this once in a fiction novel and being very surprised. I'm an American, but I picked up the book anyway and found it very interesting and shocking to me that Asians think this way. I personally find the Asian people and their culture extremely beautiful.

Hooooold on.
Almond shaped does not equal narrow Asian style. And I don't blame Asians for wanting eyelid surgery. Doing exercises won't make your eyes wider tho. lolz. From what I've heard, it's worse in the Phillippines tho. They use moisturizers with bleaching-thingie in it to become 'white' like that. Quote:

I also think asian eyes are beautiful. All that fold does is cause makeup to mess up faster.. Don't worry about it! |

How does not having folds make it weird putting makeup? I'm sincerely asking, not being sarcastic or anything. Quote:

it looks weird to put eye liner on the upper part of my eye >.>"' i usually just put a bit on my water line and that's it but...... meh i think it'd look better if i had folds, lolz :3 |

you have no idea.. lol =P |
Allene7@ Ahh well, it's a question of technique, but most Asians blend the darker shadows up against the browbone to make their eyes appear bigger and the colors appear more vibrant. ^^
yuuji@ Why does that not surprise me? : P |

why doesn't it surprise you? xD |

BUT! I tell you.. if you have small eyelids, narrow eyes or whatever, it's all about the makeup technique. ^^v |

No offense, but to say a 'race' is attractive is ridiculous. |
