Post Technological breakthrough of Japan : Broadcasting Satellites for DTH - 02-04-2010, 03:31 PM

By the mid of the Seventies, the USA, Canada and the USSR already had a few geostationary satellites to provide a national TV services. But the typical C-band antenna of a customer's satellite receiver was no less than 3 meters in diameter. In 1977 Russians deployed Ekran DBS system for rural Siberia and the Far East and along with a relatively simple Uda-Yagi antenna, standard receiver of satellite's UHF signal still consisted of bulky modules.
At the same time Japanese engineers offered a brilliant idea : to increase power of satellite's onboard transmitter and, therefore, to reduce a size of antenna.

quote :

The first satellite of this series, called BSE or Yuri was launched in 1978. The last BS series satellite, BS-3b, was launched in 1991.

The 350 kg BSE was followed in 1984 and 1986 by the operational and essentially identical BS-2a and BS-2b, respectively. Each spacecraft carried two active and one spare 100 W. 14/12 GHz transponders. Built by Toshiba with assistance of General Electric, the BS-2 series satellites were designed for five years of operation. BS-2a was moved to a graveyard orbit in 1989, followed by BS-2b in 1992.

BS satellites were used for Direct-To-Home television services in Japan. Japanese satellite television, which uses an analog format, started with test broadcasts carried out by the semigovernmental NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) in 1984. It was considered that direct satellite TV reception (DTH) was obtainable by a small parabolic antenna from 40 cm to 60 cm in diameter in all areas of Japan when broadcast from a geostationary earth orbit (GEO) of 110 degrees of east longitude.

In addition, leading positions of Japanese in the field of microelectronics made it possible to create televisions with built-in satellite receiver (tuner).

Post Japanese TVset with built-in satellite tuner - 03-09-2011, 10:35 AM

I like Japanese-made electronic consumer goods. They are almost eternal by perfect quality and incredible reliability.

This is an ancient Mitsubishi CZ-100 CRT TVset with built-in satellite BS*-tuner, powerful subwoofer and preset sound equalizer. The device is made in 1993. This picture is taken deep in God-forgotten Siberian wilderness, in one of relatively poore village.
Satellite broadcasting of DJ Bobo's show.
