Intimidation has nothing to do with imperialism.. while Ryzorian was only joking around, I like to say that he got the key point of it, most of it is coming from fear.. many of them are worry that the foreigner may walk up to them to ask a question, much of it coming from the fear of a communication barrier... there is also the fear that can be trace back as the reminance of the war. I still have a book at home that talks about how the Japanese consider American as the big bully that just come in and over power them, when they see a white boy, they don't care if its American or Australian, they just assume.... then there is the fear of the cultural difference...

Of course, if its a stare or glance from the Yakuza or some traditional old man, it will just mean "Get out of my country"

Oh I agree and it is a sad thing really.

It's the same with many Koreans still, who think that Japanese are bad people.

One of my Korean mates just changed his view around after he had actually meet a Japanese in Australia and had spend time with them. He layed of his prejudice that day and more and more people will do in the Future :)

Well, there will always be history that remind us of what happened. People's action, behavior and reaction are highly driven by historical facts, much of it are influenced by the previous generation, as well as what is socially accepted by the general public.. so go figure......

I used to think that too, until I came to Japan, and then realized how wrong I was!

Especially when you factor in body size.

There certainly are fewer big-boned/large/tall women here, the frames are smaller.
Proportionally the breasts are the same as back in the west.

Everything else is smaller though ;)

From my experience in Japan and watching youtube videos of the foreign residents in Japan I think people in Japan stare because they are like "why..do we get all the socially awkward outcasts of the rest of world) ..why can't we get someone is cool".

So then I went to Japan.

Then people were cheering and saying 'wow, finally someone who doesn't look like they play Magic the Gathering' the card game. lol (just a SMALL joke, dont murder me here people!) Then people came up and talked to me, went to a small heavy metal concert and members of the band bought me shots, then another band member bought me a shot. Then I had great conversations with everyone, people went out of their way to ask me if I needed help or directions, I received business cards, I danced with girls, I bought a sword, girls took pictures of me, I had a fish sandwich of some kind of fish which was terribly gross, guys took pictures of me (yes, im proud of this as well lol) and many other exciting and cool things.

So i'm not sure where all this doom and gloom is coming from. Maybe it's your aura that is freaking people out .. ya know!?

Yes, I was just kidding around. But it was to point out the underlying effect Americans and white guys in general have had in that region of the world..or well, any region really. The world doesn't remember us so much for our books, or music or art. It's our Obbsessive compulsive atempts to take over the various countries they live in that most of them remember.
