Looking for a nice Ryokan in Tokyo - 07-26-2010, 08:59 PM

My girlfriend and I will be staying nine nights in Tokyo in September. For the first five nights, we will be staying at the Remm Hibiya. For the last few nights, she's really hoping we could find a nice Ryokan to stay in.

That's why I'm coming here for help. I've seen a few, but, none that are relatively near the Remm that we're staying at. While I'm not opposed to traveling a moderate to long distance to the Ryokan, it would be nice if there was a good one close to where we already are. (Lugging the bags won't be fun.)

Any suggestions? Has anybody been to the Homeikan? It's not too far away...

Thanks!

Using a new online tool I discovered called "google" I managed to find the following in only 3.86 seconds...

TOKYO ACCOMMODATION GUIDE - Ryokan, Hostel, Hotel in Tokyo

Try using Google next time, but please don't tell anyone I told you

Actually I know that the Nezu/Sendagi area has a few of these places and that you can use the Hibya line to get there. I guess that helps.

You should note that some temples (jinjya) also take guests and can offer a much better experience if you are willing to abstain from sex and meat

Thanks for the repsonse...
Can't almost *anything* be answered via Google?

I've seen other threads on here, where a few members come in and provide extremely detailed and quality results about places they've visited. I figured that some of them may have been to a ryokan, and I'm more likely to believe a review from somebody off here, rather than a randomly placed review on a search engine.

I've actually looked at the website you linked to. It has very little information in the way of user reviews, and most of the pages are in Japanese...which doesn't really help me.

If anybody has first-hand experience, that would be great. Otherwise, I shall take my chances with Google. Thanks.

Have you tried this site ?
Search results: ryokan - TripAdvisor#

I am sorry I don't have first-hand experience. However. I think the site would be modestly useful for you.

Thanks.

Many of those reviews are in Japanese too (and Google doesn't want to translate them!)

But, there's a lot of information there. That might be very useful...thank you!

Ryokan is few in Tokyo.(almost are hotel)
if you want more choices, examine staying at the Onsen(hot spring).

I stayed at Homeikan but so you know that was three or four years ago. I thought it was quite nice for the price, the rooms were very large and I liked the breakfast. The neighborhood it is in is a charming area and there are lots of inexpensive places to eat nearby as it is so close to the University. I would stay there again.

I actually found it through this site:

Japanese Guest Houses - Japanese Inn (ryokan) Reservation Service

Ok, the situation is this...

Ryokan in Tokyo are for tourists. Real ryokan are not in Tokyo as people who live here tend to get away from the place for a change of scenery.

I personally would not stay in a Tokyo Ryokan. Tokyo is a major city and does not naturally lend to a ryokan experience.

What I would suggest though is to look for a place near Narita. There are many ryokan in that area and you would be well placed to get to the airport with little trouble.
Some of the ryokan even have a shuttle service to the airport.

I say ditch Tokyo after your hotel stay is up and head on out to Chiba, try Motono village or Kozaki town for starters. You will see a different side of Japan by doing this and also be close to the airport. Note: Sorry if you are using a different airpot
