There IS a difference between Lolita FASHION (key word here) and 'Lolita'.. But I see you already know that XD

Lolita is actually originally a female NAME. It comes from a word which means 'young girl' (that's most likely why the Japanese chose this word for the fashion) and it's one of the forms of the names Dolores and Lola. There are still people with the name Lolita and I think it's highly offensive to them to be compared to some STUPID book.

Or being named after a relative you dont even like.

People make associations with every name they hear. For example, Ive only had bad experiences with people named "Steven" so when I meet a new Steven I am instantly anxious and thinking of all the past ones who were morons. (This is a fictional example btw but people DO think like this).

Yes theres a HUGE difference between the Nabokov story and the FASHION style and I really wonder how many people actually link the Fashion style with the book, as its not exactly a novel read in school or anything.

The cultural associations with Nabokov's novel would be vague at best, I think- at least in North America. I dont know about what classics people read in Europe where education is more thorough, or elsewhere (hehehe I can just smell the lynching over that comment...oh well)

How many people on here have actually HONESTLY read Nabokov's "Lolita"?
And not just seen the myriad of so-so films based on it.




Its a lot like Gothic, in terms of re-defining a word.

How many people hear the word "Goth" nowadays and think of the barbarians sacking Rome? Not many....

Or hear "Gothic" and think of architecture and Walpole's mansion?

This one user on the egl community on Livejournal has a teacher with the name Lolita and one day the girl went to class dressed in Lolita and when she named the fashion, her teacher got angry, lol! Apparently she has some kind of complex with the name and I think that's just silly, personally 8/

Many of my generation of Americans look upon the term "Lolita" negatively because of the 1962 movie of the novel. With the subject matter being pedophilia, what else would you expect? And that is where the term for the clothing style came from, so one should expect a bit of disapproval from maintstream adults, especially in western culture.

Personally I try to ignore its origin and just appreciate the fashion. But its sort of like asking someone into sado-masochism to ignore the kid walking through the mall in a slave's collar. Its difficult to disassociate the fashion from its history ..... unless you were born after the history became mere fashion and wasn't taught it first.

And yes, I read the book after I saw the movie.

I'm a goth loli! It's nothing to do with that perverted book at all. It's what's known as 'Wasei Eigo' in Japanese. It means it has other english connotations which are not used in Japanese and are in no way asscoiated with that connotation!

It's not at all to do with being seductive to men, it's about expressing yourself through a fashion and being 'cute!'. Here in England, all the gothic lolitas I've met do it for the same reason me and my friends do it. Because it's cute and looks cool!

It's all about culture and fereedom of expression not social connotations!
