Half-Skirt

So, here are some photos of the prototype of a half-skirt that I had been pondering for the past while.

The thing is still a prototype, so there are still quite a few kinks to work out. So far, I've made my mind the change the lining from the dark blue polyester to a more lustrous black satin. The belt loop, I have a mind to either put it on the inside of the skirt, or to just attach the belt to the skirt directly. Also, the pleats inside the vent, I've plans to sew the pleats into the skirt, as opposed the way it's done now; the inside flap is just sewn straight onto, and the pleats are ironed in.

Also, I've been pondering of the shape of the skirt. It's kind of restricting to move in, so I am wondering if i should alter the shape of the skirt or should I just alter the way the vent has been done.

And a couple more notes~
*I intend to match the skirt with a pair of light blue jeans that have ribbons added to them. I do not currently have the jeans, since they're w/ a friend, and the new denim needs a little soaking in bleach. I'll post pictures when the jeans are finished.*

**Yes, I look an absolute horrid mess in these photos. Since 12pm on Sunday until 4am in the morning on Monday, me, my friend, and her sister have been working on the skirt/jeans, so.... yeah....forgive sloppy appearance**

Suggestions and opinions would be a lovely thing btw x]

*edit*

This is a sketch that I just did of what I am aiming for.

Needs some designs or something on it.
Just to plain x.x

ChibiOokami86 05-20-2008 01:52 AM

I think its pretty nice looking but would you call it a half-"skirt"? I'm not sure of fashions terms but when I think of skirt I think of something shorter... haha :D

BakaCrisis 05-20-2008 01:55 AM

Half shirt/Half dress

Skress?

...lol..fine
a half-dress sound better?
=.=

(i think not)

@evev - it's just a prototype xDD
and depending on how my jeans turn out....
>.<''' NO idea what i'm going to do...
might actually cut designs into the thing, like make horizontal frills or vertical pleats, or something along the lines of what yuna from FFX-2 wears in her gunner outfit, lolz
or i just might go rockish, and just hook some chains here and there xD
bleh, all depends really >.>

osanago 05-20-2008 01:57 AM

It is interesting. Is the waistband just an elastic sash, or did you attach the material over a belt?

actually, they're just belt loops
and i just slipped my belt through it
i'm considering re-working that design though...
maybe just attach something of a nylon length to each end w/ a buckle connector or something of that sort (maybe like the way cloud has it in advent children) x.x

AshriiN5 05-20-2008 02:01 AM

You're very creative tehe. I like your idea. Very good :) . Keep it up (Huggles)

osanago 05-20-2008 02:01 AM

I like the concept quite a bit. I am only confused by the inner leg. Would there be a seam, or is it left open? I think both would make for very interesting options.

if your talking about the inside of the skirt~
it's lined w/ a polyester atm, but i'm going to use a satin black in the next one >.>'
and...the vent (that split in the center), it's a piece of the triangular fabric that's been sewn inbetween the cotton twill and the polyester.

yuujirou 05-20-2008 04:51 AM

and here's a concept sketch of how i sorta want the skirt to flow

Scoob94P 05-20-2008 06:08 AM

as someone who's training to go into the textiles/fashion/design line of work i'd say your idea is really, very cool, it's something that I don't think many people have seen before. Question though, where would this be worn? At a cosplay or anime convention maybe yet would people be bold enough to wear it down the street when so many feel they have problems with their image anyway? Personally I like it and as long as you can make it work i think it will turn out just fine. I'm a perfectionist too so i know how long something like this takes to be done. I'm not even gonna mention how long my lolita skirt took to make, then cause i was tired i messed it up but not putting in elastic and just sewing it straight through, then i couldn't fit into it.. :@ I was so angry, but yeah your design is good and you should still do it.

hehe x]
biggest thing for me has and always will be that i "do not wear costumes"
x]
soo, to answer your question, yes, this (amongst many others) is meant for the streets. conventions are a plus, but the streets are the main focus.

and x]
glad you appreciate the work that goes into such things
sigh =.=
wish i could go to college for this....(no money ;_; )

and hehe...
me and my friends worked from 1pm - 12am just to create the prototype for the skirt....

i think i caught a cold from the lack of sleep =.=

I LOVE IT<3

A few questions arose here with "Mme. Practical"......

What's it like to walk in the wind? I know that may sound silly to someone where the wind isn't an issue, but I think Texans know why it comes to mind.
I remember my palazzo pants being rather difficult to manage, but at least the opposing bulk of fabric seem strangely enough to help. Anyway its a minor point.

From the pictures & sketch I could not tell, but you mentioned "inner leg". Did you overlay the skirt to an existing pant leg or replace the existing leg with an open skirt?
Overlay might solve some of the problem posed above, plus make the garment hang and move easier in general. However, it would detract from the wearer's distinct feel of wearing two separate styles of garment.

I would add a flowing, femine sleeve to one side of the jacket as well. But I have to have Taoist balance that others don't. Even so I am not sure which sleeve I would add. Above the skirt it would complete the flowing line of that half of the garment. But on the opposite side it would balance the yin-yang both vertically and horizontally.
 (actually perplexed by my own questions on this one)

about how it will handle in the wind~
that's why i made a prototype model >.>''
i was looking for something of a billowing effect, but.....
well...idk
just gonna mess around, and see what comes out of it x3

a skirt is something that encircles something else >.>'
to skirt is to lie on or along the edge of something.

>.>'
and since this little thing only goes half way around...it's a half skirt x]

Oh no, I was referring to my own alter ego that always ends up examing practical details with otherwise artistic designs.... especially in what is to be worn or carried.

and reality does need a bit of fantasy to be interesting x]
so it works out

So, Yuujirou, more creations in the works? Jean Paul Gautier and Issey Miyake have to be replaced by someone someday.

xD
think i might stay small time, lmao

though...thinking of opening a booth w/ my friend ._.
she makes awesome cosplay x]
and well...i can doodle! xDDD

MissMisa 05-20-2008 08:48 PM

I think it's awesome, a really brilliant and unique idea. Since it's the prototype it is plain, have you thought about the colour scheme? I think different hues of blue would look really awesome. Anyways keep up the good work I can't wait to see what it looks like when you get the time to completely finish it ^_^

Absolutely!!! Small endeavors with custom work can be difficult, but they can also be great fun and source of pride when they work. Some of the smaller Ren Faires might have room for you too, since some older Asian styles have crossed the quasi-Elizabethan barriers.

yuujirou 05-20-2008 08:55 PM

fear my horrible doodling ;_;

so far...on that skirt, black cotton twill on the outside, and satin black on the inside >.>'
the only designs i'd do on that would prolly be adding lace, or chains or something xD

Ahh yeah that is a really cool idea. I like your drawings aswell! My teacher always insists I should go into fashion because of some of the drawings I did for Tech but I couldn't think of such great ideas like that! ^_^

Miyavifan 05-20-2008 09:21 PM

I think I like this.

It reminds me of when I designed something, for a Gaia contest thing.

It only got to the drawing stage so far. I need to see if I can sew well.

Should I make a thread about it?
