"ganguro" literally translates as "black" and "face" but it has NOTHING to do with the racist imitation of "blackface" from '30s Americana.

(Do you really think that Japanese teenagers would pick up on a racist trend from 70 years ago and a different country?)

Ganguro has NOTHING to do with black people... it is a push against the traditional beauty tradition of subtle features, straight black hair and light skin-tones.

Well it would have been an extreme stretch. clearly.
Other cultures that havent been exposed to that sort of illustration may not realize its interpretation if they did come across it. humans are weird.

Ganguro is so alien to me. I cant imagine buying a bottle of fake tan let alone going to get a 'real' tan.

weird.
why have a name that means Blackface then? lol
is the similarity to some early illustration coincidental then.

No. In fact it's about being completely different to the rest of society. Gals created the fashion because they felt that they were different to society and wanted to express this in their own unique way.

And it is only Ganguro that actually translates to 'blackface' but people need to remember it is a literal translation.

I thought the "having the best" ethos was the kogal thing.

Kogal is just a Gal who is at school and chooses to go against her peers expectations and hinder her skin/hair tone. 'Having the best' applies to all Gyaru's.

Since the picture used in this thread was of old school Ganguro, I thought I'd post images of the new style Ganguro:
