I came across something interesting the other day.

It is said that the closer you hold the chopsticks to the tip, the longer it will be before you are married.

As everyone is saying about 'holding' the hashi wrong i think thats not true. As in american tradition we have a specific way of holding the utensiles. But actually there are 2 main ways people hold them. English, and American. For the hashi im sure that there are more than one 'tradtional' ways to hold them. me i put the one of the sticks in between my thumb and pointer, while pushing against it with my middle finger the i hold the other one with the pointer and thumb tips. but anywho i have like a set of 6 black ivory hashi. I carry a set with all the time. Im weird and always find ways to use them with western style food. lol. I even some how figured a way of 'cutting' with them.:vsign:

I learned the English way and then relearned the American way at the insistence of my father.
But I imagine the reaction of some to the "wrong" way of holding chopsticks is like when I see someone wrap their hands around a fork as if hold a drumstick, or eating from a knife.

Yep...I remember being laughed at by some asian men in a restaurant before when I was a child because I was struggling to use them, but now it's me laughing at my b/f who can't use them.

although, sometimes my fingers decide they hate me and I can't use them right, but I can use them!

Well I am now having problems with my chopsticks.:(

I sprained my middle finger over the weekend (no - not flipping someone off) and handling the sticks is painful and not well controlled either. I tried left handed and managed, but I don't have all day to eat lunch. The may be a long week.

Yep, I'm not very dab with my hands but with practice and effort I got it.

allie2590 05-28-2008 07:43 PM

I can use chopsticks if I hold one in each hand. ;D

I'm not sure if I'm using them right...however it works and I even like to eat with chopsticks...everything which seems to be suitable ^.~
