Can you use chopsticks?

Can you use chopsticks?

MissMisa 05-14-2008 04:47 PM

I actually can use them quite sufficiently. I haven't had much practice, but I think it's just one of those things I can randomly do well >.<

catapillera1 05-14-2008 04:47 PM

i love chopsticks !
i use them at home all the time !
:D

AmbeRz 05-14-2008 04:51 PM

Never tried :D

LittleFallenAngel 05-14-2008 04:52 PM

I use them^^

catapillera1 05-14-2008 04:53 PM

my sister showed me how to use them !
she tie them together when i was a little kid !
then when i got to be about 11 or 12 years old i could eat without the string around them !
:D

samurai007 05-14-2008 05:01 PM

Yes, now I can, but I couldn't before going to Japan. It took a little while to learn, but now I am quite good with them.

animelover32 05-14-2008 05:03 PM

I said no, only because I can't use them all that well. I try to practice as much as I can though. I usually don't use them outside of my house since I don't want to look like a complete idiot a resturant.

Nakishee 05-14-2008 05:16 PM

I can only use them when I have this little device that connects them together...so I checked no
I'm trying to learn without the little thing, though, and it's really hard so far

dragonxkeeper 05-14-2008 05:25 PM

i've been using them since i was 9 or 10. Now i'm trying to learn to use them with my right hand just incase i injure my left hand again and need to rely on my right.

TalnSG 05-14-2008 05:57 PM

Yes, and generally I prefer them to most silverware.

We were complaining at dinner the other night in a fancy "Vietnamese Fusion" restaurant because the place setting included cheap plastic chopsticks. The one time chopsticks frustrate me is when they are made out of slick plastic - as in imitation ivory. Everything slides off those. The few pairs I have that are plastic are at least textured on the bottom third so that they are functional.

NanteNa 05-14-2008 06:05 PM

I can... O_O mostly. X'D
But eating sliced bananas with chopsticks is SO impossible!

Crani 05-14-2008 06:07 PM

Yes, I can eat with them very well, I even started using them at home.

monkeyfist7 05-14-2008 06:24 PM

lol yes i can

not becuase im asain , that i can use chop sticks.
its becuase using chop stick is easyer for me , then forks and sppon . yeaa lol:mtongue: :ywave: * hai *

Tsuyako 05-14-2008 06:27 PM

Yeah, I can. I learned a couple of years ago at school but if I use them for long periods of time it gives me cramp in my hand >.<

BakaCrisis 05-14-2008 06:47 PM

I use them for lunch at school.

My neighbors are flight attendants on the Tokyo-Dallas run so every once in a while I get restocked with the disposable ones. They are great for keeping a supply in the car, just in case.

Anybody seen the sleek aluminum ones on JBox that come with the aluminum bento? I love the design, but I'm not so sure whether I would like using them.

zachart 05-14-2008 08:11 PM

i don't but i want to learn..

TalnSG 05-14-2008 08:17 PM

Check out these....
The World's Most Versatile Travel Chopsticks, TripStixx

I wish I had found these when I was buying corporate promotional gifts.
I would love to have a few set with my own design on them.

Cyasarin 05-14-2008 10:10 PM

I'm not going to say yes or no because I can use them...I just don't know if I'm doing it right. I'll google it and see...

Aota 05-14-2008 11:54 PM

I dunno.. It's just something I picked up while going to Chinese restaurants frequently when I was 13. I also picked up a love for curry at that time, too. Haha.

I don't really see what's so difficult about using them...

Nyororin 05-15-2008 12:03 AM

Yes, even long before I came to Japan and used them on a constant basis.
I haven`t the slightest idea where and when I learned to use them, it certainly wasn`t at home as no other family members can manage at all.
I just... could.

MarkDuff 05-15-2008 12:04 AM

I wish every time I try to use them I get what ever I'm eating all over me

Dainty 05-15-2008 12:39 AM

Nope. ):
When I was little, I could use them very well, but now it's just a very, very sad attempt. :\

SamuraiAlchemistNinja 05-15-2008 12:41 AM

Of course I can use them, lol. But I still have trouble from time to time...this is only because I don't have very much Japanese food to use them with!

Kenta21 05-15-2008 01:32 AM

I dont use them at home, but i use them when i eat out.

Excessum 05-15-2008 02:34 AM

Yes... and recently i have come to conclusion that it is often easier to eat with chopsticks than with a fork... I'd love to get myself a pair to use at home, but there are just no shops to buy nice chopsticks around here and i am not a big fan of the disposable wooden ones >_<
...the spoon is still irreplaceable in most situations though.

Tyrien 05-15-2008 02:57 AM

Yup, got myself a pair. I use them when I happen to be bored and hungry at the same time.

TalnSG 05-15-2008 03:04 AM

The first time I remember using chopsticks was in a chinese restaurant in Acapulco, Mexico. I think I was 12. Only I already new how to use them at that point. Don't know where I picked them up the first time.

Western food in general is sometimes ill suited for chopsticks, but lately I find them much better for salads than forks. It seems restaurants no longer care to make the lettuce bite size and the dull pointed fork tines won't skewer anything but the ribs in the leaves.

Katchan6 05-15-2008 03:34 AM

i've been able to use them since i was little but then recently i found out i was holding them wrong lol

Don`t worry about that - I think something like 25% of Japanese people hold them wrong. My husband included.

MissMisa 05-15-2008 05:52 AM

Wow I didn't expect there to be so many people able to use them :O

Yeah I was also like that too, most random.

emiluvsjmusic 05-15-2008 06:16 AM

yeah, i use them like every day :vsign:

UtakataChan 05-15-2008 07:38 AM

I went to a hibachi house today.. and tried to use the chopsticks. The waiter must have thought I looked stupid because he actually took a folded piece of paper, stuck it in between two sticks, and tied it together with a rubber band and gave it to me. XD

godwine 05-15-2008 12:05 PM

Not replying to any specific post, but a general comment. If you ask anyone that grew up from an oriental family that uses chopstick, they will tell you that to "CLAIM" the ability to use a chopstick is more than holding it and grab food with it, but to hold it in the proper form and height

I was able to "USE" is for 20 somewhat odd years, and my family keep giving me a hard time for "not knowing how to hold and use the chopstick". I didn't manage to correct it until i was around 27 or 28....

not really sure what your talking about x]
but yeah, aLOT of people hold hashi wrong >.>"""
believe the correct method is to stick your middle finger
between both sticks.
what most people do is like put the middle finger to the side of the sticks.....

by putting your middle finger inbetween, you create a lever, w/ your finger acting as a fulcrum

by putting it to the side....your just operating each stick individually >.>'''

bleh x]
*wonder if that's what your talking about*

NightChilde25 05-15-2008 01:14 PM

I can use them. I just don't have many places to use them. We only have a few Japanese and chinese resturants in my area and my friend, Helen, makes sushi a lot. I have a couple of sets of them. I agree with you on the slick plastic ones,TalnSG. You just can't get a good grip. I've seen the aluminum chopsticks on JBox. They look great but I'm not sure they'd be much be much better than the plastic ones if they don't have textured grips.
