Actually, I can see why you made that mistake:

Anime characters often say "dou" and the translation on the bottom says *something like* "What do you think?". Genki could be construed as excited, and I think I have seen that in anime before, if infrequently.

Anywayz, "dou" literally means "how", I believe.

"Anata, dou?" is how I usually hear it when they translate 'what do you think'. Then "anata wa dou" (or 'kimi wa...' in this case) I usually see translated as Pepsi showed: "how are you".

I don't personally understand the nuance of that one, but that's how I usually hear it :P .

From beginner to beginners....but why dou??? The question in English is "how are you?", thus there is a how. But the phrase in Japanese is "genki desu ka" which means "are you feeling ok?" (roughly)...there is no how there. So probably the message should have been "genki desuyo. kimi wa?", more like "I ma feeling good, what about you?".

But of course I very seldom guess things right in Japanese hee hee.

IMO,

"genki desu yo. kimi wa?" - I'm good(or ok,fine, etc). You?

"Genki desu yo. Kimi wa dou?" - I'm good(or ok,fine, etc). How about you?

roughly. So either way should be fine but you can always say the same stuff in alot of (more or less) different ways.

correct me if I'm wrong, but the "Wa" near the end is the particle whose kana looks like "ha." Right?

Been awhile since I took japanese lessons and I'm tryin to reteach myself >.> I pretty much have the sentence structure down, but I have hardly any vocabulary at all
