it's chinese....it's a sequel to...uh, let me think which movie it was...i want to say it's a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but it might actually have been Hero that it was a sequel to. Zhang Ziyi is so beautiful...how did they talk her into playing in Memoirs of a Geisha? she's not japanese x.x

ShibaInu 03-30-2007 10:36 PM

yeah, it's a chinese movie, though, one of the lead actors, Takeshi Kaneshiro, is half-Japanese, half-Chinese...

Al Pacino is not Cuban and he played one in Scarface and Mel Gibson is not Scotish, and he played William Wallace in BraveHeart.

i would like to point out that i hated scarface...and furthermore, if it was an american movie, than why have i yet to see a single english version?

Kanji_The_Wanderer 03-31-2007 02:15 AM

Another awesome Chinese romance martial arts movie by Zhang Yimou. House of Flying Daggers isn't a sequel to Crouching Tiger or Hero, it is an entirely different movie with it's own story.

Rikku777 03-31-2007 04:57 AM

This had some cool fighting and effects, but it bored me a bit, lol. :o I want to see CTHD, I guess I need to, I really like his films.

Yeah, what Kanji said. Favorite scene would have to been the one where she does that drum dance or what ever you call. Man, I should know too. I studied China for like 4 years. And whoever said it was a little boring, definitely do not watch Raise the Red Lantern. I loved it, but then I loves me some China. Suddenly I really feel like eating some gongbao jiding loaded with MSG.

x.x i have crouching tiger...i don't even remember why i bought it, i thought it was too low key

Gwen_Goth 03-31-2007 01:25 PM

i didnt like house of flying daggers all that much; i prefered CTHD; it was a real breakthrough film.

Flying Daggers went too far with the flying sequences; i dont like it when action, stunts and special effects take over a movie's heart.

same for hero; plus im not a huge Jet Li fan...

Im looking forward to Curse of the Golden Flower; looks interesting, but im afraid it'll be like Flying Daggers.

dragonrazor 03-31-2007 01:48 PM

i want to see that, but i'm afraid it's going to be too much of a drama *hates dramas*

MortishaRinnukin 03-31-2007 03:38 PM

Yes, it is a long Chinese soap opera or a Chinese Romeo and Juliet type of movie, but in overall; it is really good. Great I want to see it now. Good thing I have the DVD

Kayame 04-01-2007 06:16 AM

Ok...so anyone know where I could find a DVD of it?

I agree,I think too many special effects are not
good for any movie, just see what Hollywood became.i'm not a big Jet Li fan either, but Hero haves value!

Avary_Ninja 04-01-2007 10:12 AM

During filming of House of Flying Daggers, actress Anita Mui died. This forced Zhang Yimou to change the ending. That,s why at the end there's a huge time wastage with people dying, coming back to life, and then dying again.

Visually the movie is stunning, but story wise it sucks.

But it's got Zhang Ziyi so... *drools*

Avary_Ninja 04-01-2007 10:15 AM

Re : Curse of the Golden Flower :

Once again Zhang Yimou relies on color palettes to carry the story. He is an artist, the screen is his canvas.

I agree with Gwen, CTHD was a real breakthrough film...no Chinese film after that has reached the same depth and story as CTHD...but still, "House of the Flying Daggers' and 'Hero' are still interesting to watch...

Curse of the Golden Flowers or Armors was already shown here in China...Although, it was still not as good as CTHD, i would say that it's probably better than Flying Daggers and Hero...

i agree on both counts

*still has yet to see an english dubbed version of HoFD*

Kayame 04-01-2007 06:20 PM

I think the part when they fight in bamboo forest was a bit much, but I thought that over all it should atleast get 3 stars. But it was confusing with the blind being able to see, then the dying and who the enemy was and the bad guys @.@

i have a big big hate of english dubbed live action films; i just hate it.. the word/lip-sync never matches up, and whole sentances can go missing and confuse a whole story line just because they couldnt fit in the words

im just used to reading subtitles now ^^

i'm good at the subtitles...but i don't like having to READ what i'm watching...if i wanted to read, i'd get a book instead of a movie

I'm sure you can find it at your local Best Buy, that's where I bought my copy.

AoshiShinomori 04-02-2007 04:06 AM

I found HoFD to be less of an action movie and more of an emotion based fantasy sequence. I like such sequences so I liked the movie. I thought it was very creative with the way in which the director shows that on one side there is a love that has lasted three years of sacrifice from a man, while on the other side the woman falls for just three days of care. It's up for grabs as to which is more true, but it was a very deep concept and IMHO the director truly did a wonderful job trying to portray such a concept.

On the contrary, CTHD was more of an action and less of a romance saga. Both films had action and romance but I found the action to be more pronounced in CTHD and the romance to be more pronounced in HoFD.

Good movies both though :vsign:.. It just takes a while to really understand the deeper message in them.

Kayame 04-02-2007 10:00 PM

I just have the problem of wanting to look up to see what I'm supposed to be watching not reading it. I mean they could at least make it englsih, teach them their words in english, and do that, I would be soooooo happy. But I wouldn't like it if they did voice oversbecause I hate it when the lips don't match what they are saying because I also know how to lip read, so I usually end up doing that when watching movies.

BTW, I live in one of the biggest hich towns ever. We don't even have a super center wal-mart, more or less a best buy.

Arabian 04-03-2007 06:47 PM

:vsign: Fantastic movie...specially the fighting...

The fighting was cool, but it looked really fake.

I absolulty love the film, it is my best film at the moment, i now am a big fan of Zhang Yimou's work, all his films i have bought of i am buying, i think his style of filming is great and the picture/colour in his films is great.

I am also a big fan of Ziyi Zhang now, i have watched so many films with her in, she is the best actress ever!
The film is very well put together, not much more you can expect from a Zhang Yimou film.

I have to say i love films more when there in there mother tongue, with house of flying daggers i think its adds effect and emotion because it is in Japanese, i would hate to see a english dubbed version of it, they are cheap and nasty.

Will.

I thought this was an awesome movie.. storyline, fight scenes, cinematography..it was all very beautiful. I loved the colors and the use of them in fight scenes. It was classic Chinese tragedy.

ok...so who was the enemy, and what is the point of the story?

Hisuwashi 04-17-2007 12:51 AM

I think the bad guy's Leo. And the point of the film is.. well I don't know! It's a nice film though. I think it's an artistic type of film.

Kanji_The_Wanderer 04-17-2007 01:31 AM

The point of the film? It is basically Jin, (Takeshi Kaneshiros character) is trying to get the blind girl (Zhang Ziyi) to lead him to the House of flying daggers new leader. The killed the old leader, the government has been tracking them for a long time, and they want to end the rebels who defy the laws. But actually, The guy Leo, (Andy Lau) who is the captain of the guard in the city, works for the flying daggers and has been playing the government for 3 years, he sent Jin on a false mission, Jin is also captain of the guard. So Mei was sent and pretended to be the leader's blind daughter to catch Jin from interfering, and to eliminate suspiscion of their whereabouts. As they travel the days through the wilderness Mei develops feelings for Jin, she betrays Leo's love, and the rest I am sure you get. The movie has a simple plot really.

Hisuwashi 04-17-2007 01:50 AM

So I don't think Leo is a bad guy really? Good explanation btw Kanji-san.

Oren 04-17-2007 02:13 AM

This movie was so tragic and beautifully done... i must admit that I wept like an infant at the end " If she gets up I'll be sooo pissed!" *winks at Kanji*
