Nintendo announces Nintendo DSi

Nintendo's Media Summit has just thrown us its first juicy bone of the night, and it's a big one. As was previously rumored, Satoru Iwata has revealed the Nintendo DSi, the direct successor to the DS Lite. Hit the break and refresh for regular updates!

Update 1: The GBA slot is gone (nooo!), while the size has been reduced by 12% or 2.6 millimeters.

Update 2: And we have a 3 Megapixel camera, music playback, and screens that are expanded to 3.25 inches!

Update 3: There's an SD slot also, built-in memory, an on-board browser, and game downloads that use Wii Points! The DSi will come with 1,000 free Wii Points.

Update 4: Correction: make that two cameras!

Update 5: A new download service to accompany WiiWare: DSWare is confirmed. Wow.

Update 6: Get those preorders in, people: the DSi launches on November 1st, and will come in white and black. We look forward to seeing the queues for this. Oh, and it's ¥18,900, or roughly $179.

Update 7: Back to DSWare: apparently, this will be priced at four different price points: free (!), 200 Wii Points, 500 Wii Points, and "premium" (800 Wii Points).

Update 8: The colors for the DSi will be matte black and matte white. Begone, foul fingerprints that have taunted us so!

Update 9: Correction of our correction: there does appear to be only one camera. That's enough for us!

Update 10: Oops, another correction required here, folks. There will be two cameras after all: an external 3 Megapixel versions, and one VGA camera located on the hinge, directed towards the user. Sorry about that! [Thanks, Rika!]

It does seem like quite a late announcement... But I`m sure there is some back reason for it - if nothing else to be sure of supply before setting a date.

Not quick at all Nintendo just isn't like Sony or Microsoft and don't feel the need to announce their products months/years in advance for heavily hyped PR releases.

It sounds like a glorified DS though, nothing more. No mention at all about new hardware that can support better games than before, huh?

WOW!! now all they need is to add a phone mixed into that and that would be a perfect DS. No? I just hope the graphics are as good as it sounds.

It will be out this November in Japan, in Europe it'll be in the spring.

I'm not all that impressed, and it's mostly because they took out the GBA slot. A slight change in screen size doesn't excite me at all.

But I will still keep my old DS as I have too many precious GBA games to just chuck it out *huggles DS*

I dont think it was a good idea to take away to GBA slot....
What use would a camera be, seeing as most people have camera's in their phones already, or own a digicam?

To me, its just a vain spinoff from NDS lite.

Completely agree.

I know that gimmicky gadgets have appeal to some but I think it's getting a bit ridiculuous.

Maybe I'm just getting old :mtongue:

Haha... I got the old school "DS Brick" as my friends call it. Still does the trick though.

I like my fat DS! For me it's been almost indestructible. It fell down a spiral staircase a good way and still works perfectly :D I was well gutted when it hit the floor after falling out of my bag, but I switched it on and was like, yay, life!

Still, not has hardy as my gamecube. That endured so much and still works fine haha xD

The point I want to prove is that the original DS isn't "bad", Nintendo is just remaking it (again) to keep it alive. Same with the PS2. They make small improvements to the system and change its design.

It just sounds like Nintendo has taken points out of Sony's book for handheld consoles. Even Sony didn't put this many gimmicks into the PsP.

It just sounds like another waste of money.
