With a WHV you are going to be limited to part-time work, most likely in a bar, club, or restaurant. These jobs don't pay very well, but you will at least be able to support yourself during your stay.

If you decide you like Japan, and wish to stay longer, you can apply at a regular company and get them to sponsor you for a regular work visa. Of course, to qualify for a work visa, you need a university degree, or several years experience in a relevant "profession" ("profession" does not include "blue-collar" jobs).
