International transfers vs cash exchange - 12-08-2011, 06:57 AM

I have a japanese bank account at a bank in Tokyo and I need to take about £650 sterling (aprox 80,000 yen) from it over xmas to transfer to my British bank account. Now, I can set up an international transfer from my Tokyo bank, but it's apparently going to cost me 4000 yen every time I send money plus whatever my British bank charges for accepting the transfer- making it only probably worth doing in big lump sums say, once a year or so.

However, I'm actually going home for christmas so would it be cheaper, do you think, to exchange cash (Ie, order sterling instead) and simply take it with me on my return?

I would advice on bringing the cash , its just a waste to pay those charges. You can either convert it to pounds in Japan first or you can do it in your country , whichever has the bigger exchange rate.

Whenever I go home, I bring yen with me, cause there are some exchanger back home with a bit higher rate than banks so I can more on my yen

Thanks Samokan. I've found a place I can get cash at a good rate, much better than arranging a wire transfer.
