joking aside;
Nyororin and everybody else, what is your experience with banking in Japan for a foreigner?

Setting it up involved a sheet with Japanese/English phrases on it, and a lot of the teller running back to speak with her English speaking manager. Mind you this was when I first arrived in Osaka and spoke 3 words of Japanese.

After that, the only time I needed to go back to the bank was to set up wire transfers. And they had an employee with VERY good English for that.

Most of my banking was automated.

I live in Japan, not in Tokyo, and have lived here for almost 9 years now. I basically came to Japan with nothing (On my own, not part of any program, not as a teacher, with almost no money, etc) when I was 17, and have been here pretty much ever since.

I`m now married, and *own* a home. I`m willing to answer pretty much any questions about real life in Japan - not the English teacher in Tokyo type stuff... Because that`s only like 0.1% of reality. (Not to offend any of the English teachers in Tokyo or anything though.)

We usually try and help other people who are/were in the same boat as I was when I came to Japan (Bad family life, etc), but last year a girl we let stay with us really screwed us over so we have stopped for the time being. But I really want to help people, so if I can in any way please ask!

(Oh, and I think I mentioned a lot more stuff in my intro in the introductions thread, so...)

@ Nyo.

You never had to leave Japan?

I thought you could only stay for a certain amount of time, at first?

Read what I posted. I think in my second post in this thread, I went into detail about how long I was in Japan each time, etc. As I haven`t had any visa violations, yes, I did leave Japan for short periods until I was married.

I didn't go back in the thread, because I do have other things to do as well. sorry.

You should look up other threads in Living in Japan section.

There is a thread about the importance of having a college degree.

Unless you guys have some kind of special skills, your chances are slim.

It`s on the first page of the thread, if I recall correctly. I am going to assume you did read that page, or else you wouldn`t know about my current status.

It is not legal to work in Japan without a work visa and not possible to get a work visa unless you have an employer/sponsor. There are working holiday visas from Canada and some other countries (not including USA) but those are not permanent.

I'm sorry, but its just annoying to see all these already answered questions being asked all the time. You have 66 pages, It's a lot, yeah, but it sure is worth to read. You'll learn a lot.

No one lives without work or having a job.
