I was able to do it and get by for 2 years in Japan. You'll pick up the necessities for living and getting around before too long.

Well that really depends on your own ability to adabt. Some people learn the ropes...some people eat soap thinking it's japanese candies...XD

English will get you by btw. Not always well, but it's not like you would die.

How did you make to sort yourself out? where are you from? was it difficult to get on with language? did you stayed studying or you just worked very hard?
