Now. I know most of you are aware of what I'm typing about.
Misusing the word rape

This is the definition of rape.
1. Assault sexually; force to have sex.

2. Destroy and strip of its possession; "The soldiers raped the beautiful country".

I wanted to bring these to you guys attention.
This crap, " -Rapes [ Insert name ]"
and " I wanna rape [ Insert name ]"
Is off the edge.
Do you people have any idea what you're " casually" making fun of?
THOSE EXAMPLES ABOVE.
Oh How hilarious.

This needs to stop.
We need a rule and we need it to be put into action.
That is all.

I am in absolute agreement with you on this Eve!

I find this misuse of the word rape that is so prevalent on this forum far more obscene than even the occasional profanity that slips in.

Rape is an extreme serious subject and regardless of where this disgusting trend started, it needs to end here, now!

This is not a matter of cultural or generational difference, this is blatant disregard for the violation of the sensibilities of those who know rape for the violent and viscious violation of a person that it is.

..doesn't the forum have a "word" filter? most of the users here are youngsters & some of the words or language their using is sometimes out of their comprehension, coz some sez it's Cool to use the Word! duhhh.....

The filter mentioned in the FAQ is not on. I asked.

While you are right about some posters not realizing their usage of some words is way off base, this is not the case with the posts Eve and I are referring to. According to the poster's profiles many of them are more than old enough to know exactly what they are saying. Nor is it a matter of English not being their native language in most cases.

I second Eve's suggestion. I know it's all in good fun blah blah blah, but maybe it is time they realize there're certain things that cannot be made fun of, rape being a very clear example.

I too agree with you eve, back you 100% misuse of this word should never take place.

This reminds me of the time when they were using the word "Thrust" in the roleplay area.

Yes it is a word that obviously needs to be x-nayed.....but the problem is that people might use the word one way or another....It's like saying you can't say shit....or fuck...and ass. And if you were to use the filter. When people try to make a point using those words, well sometimes it doesn't make sense. And besides even if there are underaged here, you can't really stop people from using the words, they're used anywhere in the world.

I suggest that those who don't like it when they see it....tell that person to refrain from using it. We'd be helping the mods in a way....I doubt they read thru hundreds of threads just to see who wrote the "rapes so and so".

It's a good idea, but we need to pitch in our help as well.

Im not agree cuz doin' a "rules" for not using a word....ok I never use the "rapes" word here but its not that.
We already have an Etiquette & Rules Topic + We are in a forum ..ok there are a lot of young boy&girl (young=11-14 yrs old) but most of the people here know what they are sayin' here so Your idea is great but we just have to apply the rules..(Respect each other,etc..). and dont forgot that a forum is a place to exchange and have fun, like be outside and having fun with friendz = Respect,Peace,Fun...

Perhaps rather than filters and the rule that are being ignore we could try another tactic.

Maybe if our most judicial moderator would email those doing this and recommend they read this thread, it might get them to re-examine their use of "rape". I am sure it would set better than if we all went to them and objected or if rules were announced. That might backfire with it being used even more in defiance.

I agree. There was a case where a member used to word rape, but they had absolutely no idea that it was a nasty word because of the casual way people use it on this forum. Because she was foreign and only just realised the seriousness of what she said, she apologized. But I think even if people don't agree with the moral aspect of using the word rape, I still thing it is important that is not misused because we do have a few foreign people who will not understand the serious nature of the word, and after all this is a language forum, we want to help people with their English, not distort it.

You are so right. I think that is the major cause of my personal discomfort with this usage. It does make it sound like something that is not just ok, but good to do to someone.

I was at first uncomfortable seeing it used... but I've figured that it is not meant as actual rape....

it's just my opinion, but since the people I've seen use it, I don't believe actually do it for real, in real life outside of the forum, then it doesn't bother me so much. not as it used to.

:rolleyes: I dont mind seeing it used at all. I've heard it being used on comedy TV shows and stuff. And I've used it a lot. Joking about raping a Jrocker or something doesnt mean we're saying "oh, rape is fine!"...

I dont hang out in the music section as much as I used to, so I dont use it as often.
If there was a person on here who was a victim of rape and requested us to stop using it because they genuinely were offended, then we would stop...

The whole point here is that it's a word that shouldn't be sued so lightly, or in a joking manner. It's not about people going out and actually doing it or not. It's pretty much a given that all the "kids" on this forum tossing the word around aren't really going to do it.

The fact is though, it's not a fucking joke. So stop treating it like one.

Ok so i want everybody on JF stop using the word "OWN" Im not using it..and i see a lot of JF Girl using it for Jrocker...These Jrocker are Human not Robot they deserve more respect and they are "owned" by People..

So Jrock fangirls apparently aren't allowed to joke or have fun with any words anymore...

I'm not a victim of rape but I am bothered by the misuse of this term, like a lot of other people here who have also asked in a polite manner to cut it off once and for all. It is offensive, even for people who have never been through such experience, but if it has to be someone who's actually been raped, I know more than one person on here that could do it.

Ok, we can go that route. I will speak up because there are probably other victims who aren't comfortable speaking up and they are the ones we need to be concerned for - not me.

Though it has nothing whatsoever to do with why I object to how the term is being used here, I am genuinely offended and I was the victim of rape attemtps in 1968 and again in 1976. Need any more details? They are on file with law enforcement officials in Mississippi and Texas.

Actually I find the jokes uncomfortable because I have witnessed what this sort of flippant disregard in conversation for the matter has on people who were more traumatized than I was. Joking about this matter can cause a rape victim to compound the emotional trauma with feeling that their reactions to the rape are unhealthy because others are able to laugh about rapes.

Its nothing like joking about murder where everyone knows its wrong. There are entire cultures that still condone rape and many people even in western countries who continue to blame the victim.

Ne, people just use it for fun.
It's not to be taken personally.
And a lot of the time, they want to 'Own' the person becuase they may actually be in love with them.

I don't believe we're joking about it, but I see your point, also.

There is another issue that we have foreign people on here that do not understand the term rape because it has been used in a joking way, so they think that it is actually a humourous term. We have to remember that this is a language forum and using terms in this way can be confusing for foreign members learning English and it's not good that they are understanding the term 'rape' in a joking way. If they mentioned it anywhere else I think people would be pretty shocked. Even if you don't believe in the morals behind it, such as offending people and so on, this is another issue to consider.

The thing is guys no one should have to confess to being raped in order for you to stop using it. That's just sick of you guys to take it to that level.

Go ahead and joke around all you want I don't care, however replacing the word rape with sex still gets the joke out and doesn't offend anyone near as much.

You are mocking rape. Rape is a painful thing so me and others are kindly asking you guys to stop.
I have approached several members about their usage and I get the same response, " I was just kidding" or " Don't take it seriously"
Regardless of what you say I do take it serious because it is serious.
Just like you don't bad mouth God in church you shouldn't make fun of rape around potential rape victims.

Rape isn't like cuss words.
I mean really, do you walk up to someone whos child died and start talking about dead children?
It doesn't matter which way you mean it. Rape itself is a serious issue and unlike alot of words and actions it hurts people.
So when you " use it in a different way" those people who were hurt or who've had someone hurt aren't going to see it as " a different way" all you're doing is bringing back bad memories when you could easily replace it with the word " sex"

ok use this term in any way is not a good idea and I agree on the principle .. BUT in this case I think that communication, understanding and the atmosphere on JF will further deteriorate this. No one said we're asking to ban a word. What's being asked is to not use the word so carelessly. There's a difference between using the word to depect destruction ex: "He raped him In Halo 3". Opposed to reckless and insensitve use "*rapes jrockerfaggot xxxx*".

Context is what's being asked, not banishment.

Also when someone jokes about rape around me in person, I ask them nicely to not do that. And they apologize and never do again but for some reason when I get on the net and ask it's this big issue.

But like i said before We are on internet..and on a forum..if we start to ...{i want to say advice?} people not using a word because its inappropriate.., they're gonna say " Its Only for Fun...stop boring me..they always want to forbid everything" I understand your point (REALLY)...but remember the pics story..things can go fast from nothing and take proportion totaly crazy..(I mean disproportionate..o_O )

With that logic we should be free to debate over religion. But that was placed for a reason.

However with the rape issue it's essentially the same. One of the rules is even to respect other members. Well making a complete mockery of something as sensitve as rape is not respecting other members. Even if you don't think that anyone is being offended someone might be. That someone may not want to say anything either - and they shouldn't have to.

Wouldn't it be a big deal if people were constantly making jokes about cancer, AIDS, abortions, or down syndrom (I could go on but that should be enough)? Yes, it would be a huge deal and possibly get someone banned.

Again, no one has ever asked to ban the word. All that's being asked is to stop and think about how you use the word.
