Thats not true if you go at night, most Japanese tend to go to the theaters during the daytime. I went to see Indiana Jones 4 during the late showing and it was like 75% full on opening day. And that is probably the most crowded it will get at that time.
I'd say book them on the internet a few hours beforehand but its definitely not required. Nothing like opening day for films in the USA.
