I like the "sing-songy" quality of Kansai-ben over the rat-a-tat of staid Kanto-ben. Maybe that'a why it sounds more honest?

but to your average kanto ben speaker, kansai ben is harsh and rude sounding

Yes, I have had Tokyo-ites cringe in fear as they listened to my Kansai friends have a normal conversation about where to go for dinner.

It might be how New York or Boston accents can sound intimidating and like "fighting words" to West Coast boys like me, when they are just having a normal conversation.

Someone once told me that going to kansai and speaking kansai ben (even worse, Wakayama ben) was like someone going to America and staying on Louisiana and learning to speak with a southern accent.

I don't think that's a good comparison as no one thinks the Louisiana southern accent is "cool".

Of course. Whenever I return, I think of you and all the people I (or we) knew. It's funny, but I always remember you (and others) when I think of Hashimoto or our small college town in the States, I think of you even though we only knew each other a very short time.

Glad I made a good impression then! I think about my time there and the many people I knew very often.

If you stop by either the zosui place near Rt 24 on the road down from Hashimoto station, or the Sankakutei restaurant across the street from the station, please tell them that I really miss their food, and even 10 years later I dream about it! I had so many friends and great memories in Hashimoto, I really would like to go back again someday.
