Question Skype and Instant Messaging. Which one? - 06-03-2009, 12:43 PM

I recently set up Skype so I can communicate with friends and family down South in Old Sydney Town.

It doesn't appear to get much of a mention here.. How many of you are using it? What's your opinion on the gadget?

Is the alternative MSN, Yahoo?

Are they all the same or is one better?

I find that Skype video sticks a lot, or could that just be my camera?

Cheers - Oz

I installed it on my computer, so I can call friends in Japan for free. It's a messenger/phone service hybrid, but isn't perfect at either one. Though, it is useful for the job I want it to do.

It's OK, but not perfect hey.. They seem to bring out all these new gadgets but nothign ever seems perfected..

But can't you use MSN the same way as Skype?

MSN can almost be used like Skype.
Except that, with Skype, you can get a premium service, and get issued a phone number. This way, dialing the number can be just like dialing a phone number for non-Skype users.

[Unless MSN does that now, but I don't believe so ]

I prefer skype. But your title doesn't make any sense...skype is also an instant messager?

I haven't used MSN for years, but I do remember people starting to use webcams with it.

The Skype works for me mainly so my son can communicate with his grandparents.. The vids are a bit distorted but the long distance compensates the negs.

I like Windows Live Messenger the best! It's great, I do have a Skype though, I just never use the calling or video features.

Windows Live Messenger is much better as for Instant Messaging.

As for VoIP, Skype pwns the hell out of anyone.
