Especially older Japanese are worried about Japan, partially due to crimes like these. We often talk about how safe Japan is, but 30 years ago people would leave their groceries in their bike basket and go shopping in another store. I don't think that happens know. People aren't as trusting as they used to be, and part of it comes from crimes like these.

Right when I started reading that, I had a flashback of "Battle Royale" -- turns out she was reading the book shortly before her attack.
