Yeah felt that one even up here in Hokkaido. First one we've felt since the big one last month.

Up to 2m tsunami expected in Miyagi

Why are all these strong earthquakes at the same time?

RealJames 04-07-2011 02:51 PM

it might be a kind of aftershock ... just my guess

Below is a plot of the earthquakes in the region since the M7 quake just before the big one up until 5 April. There have been over 900 quakes of M4.5 or greater since the big one. This latest one would be the biggest since then. Do some reading about plate tectonics and earthquakes if you really want to know why there's been so many.

I wonder how coverage of this would be different has it been the first one, or .. had the first one been this size...

On the news I'm looking at aerial footage of Sendai, with fires in the city.

It looks like this quake was big enough to rupture gas/oil lines.

And the tsunami size was adjusted to 2m in the reports

I just caught sight of it on NHK just now . . . scary when the aftershock is 7.4, especially when it's not even the main earthquake, it kind of puts the first earthquake more into perspective . . .

Is everyone okay there? The news here seems to suggest it's too early to tell, but that there's no reported injuries, damage or death. I'm hoping that everyone's okay, but with another tsunami warning out it's rather disheartening to imagine it could all happen again . . .
