Actually if this is a reliable organization, $5000 is very reasonable.
I've heard of other groups charging more around $7000.

But that was also longer than just two weeks.
I think you could find a better deal elsewhere.

it's cheaper to go 9 months instead of going for 14 days
just saying
i mean think about it 14 days really isn't that long
going for 9 months is better...it's about $10,000 but still it's a lot cheaper and you get to stay there longer

There are some where you can stay for the summer or the school year, or with a host family!

For a school program this is disturbingly expensive. You obviously aren't going to be eating in the fanciest restaurants or staying at the most expensive hotels. Unless you are going to be flying around Japan to Hokkaido and Kyushu, I'd say rip-off.

Gottta agree with MMM (and the other guys posting a rip off) on this one.

To be honest, they will be sending you coach class, putting you up in no more than 3 star accomodation and to save on travel costs etc, they most likely have their own shoddy coach (or connections to get such cheap tansport) for your stay.

If your serious on going with school mates etc, then get one of your parents (or a friends parents) who is reliable and have them plan the trip out for you. Say about $3000 per head (or less depending on what majority can afford). That will give you guys lots of cash to spend on decent accomodation, decent transport and even a fulltime holiday translator (just have him/her sit in the coach untill desperately needed, that way you guys can learn to speak the language as much as possible on your own).

You can have lots of trips and attractions included in the plan, but you should at least bring one adult per 10 kids (that way if you wish to split up for the day, there is someone responsible and mature to look after the smaller groups and ensure your safety, lone students can be easy pickings for criminals and low lifes).

As long as you guys use your head and do not start anything, then you should have a wonderful time at a fraction of the dissapointing travel agent, who is looking to profit on your naiveness and trust in there program being worth the money.

Hope you get to go on your trip on your own terms and have a great time whether you go alone or with friends.
