If you are staying in Kyoto the first day, I recommend

1) arrive in Narita
2) go to Tokyo
3) get on bullet train to Kyoto
4) go to hotel in Kyoto

if there is time and you have the energy you can then go to Kinkakuji.
We are landing in Narita on Sunday 3/28, staying with friends. We plan to travel to Kyoto from Tokyo on Tuesday, 3/30 on the Hikari, try to leave early. Your suggestions for the first day in Kyoto are appreciated.

I would recommend Kiyomizu and Kinkakuji.

In the same day it may be much, but in Arashiyama is Monkey Mountain which is a good hike, but perfect in March or April (I have done it twice in August, and it was hell). Your daughter will enjoy seeing and feeding the monkeys much more than seeing too many temples.

Another fun trip for kids and adults is taking the Torokko train up and coming back on the Hozugawa River Boat Ride. More about that here: Sightseeing in Kameoka - Kameoka City Web Site

I'm sorry in poor English
Arrival is ... for 27
Is it from Tokyo for March 30?
If it is so...
I think Kyoto to be comfortable from Himeji, Himeji from Tokyo.
You should go early if you go to Kinkaku-ji Temple after the check-in

Thank you for your advice~~
We will go to Himeji from Tokyo, then on to Kyoto in the afternoon.
The next day, we will go to Kinkaku-ji very early, then make our way to Nishi-jin textile area.

Still planning!

I've done this, it's a really fun and memorable trip! At the time I noticed my group of three were the only non-Japanese taking this train/boat ride so while it felt fun and touristy it felt very local and non-touristy at the same time.
