Kimonos/Furisode/Yukata

Any japanese fangirls in love with a beautiful traditional japanese dress? ^_^ and has anybody wear them?

Kimonos are traditional clothing wored by all men and women. Most commonly on Geisha

Furisode is commonly for Unmarried females

Yukata are commonly wore in festivals

Vesperd 10-23-2006 09:08 AM

My Sister has a kimono laying somewhere in the house, Japanese girls look pretty elegant in them

MasterHien 10-24-2006 09:23 PM

Wow Yukata look good on girls

aphrodite 10-24-2006 11:26 PM

i want one so badly but i have to save up for one

I love kimono too! Kimono is awesome. I went to the japanese exposition at the summer fair in my city and they had a demonstration of how to put on a kimono or yukata. The lecture was given by a graduate from a Kimono School in Japan. They also displayed kimono in glass cases. Those silk embroidered furisode are beautiful works of art. Expensive too. When you buy the furisode, obi, and all the accessories the price easily equals that of a car.

I bought a Kimono from the Collection du Japon boutique at the fair. But now I don't know what to do with it

Anyways, here are pics ^_^

Furisode. Worn by young unmarried women, they are the most expensive and elaborately designed. Kirei!

Yukata. Light summer kimono usually made of cotton. Popular wear for matsuri, bon odori.

Kimono is win! I think kimono wins because of its elegance.

I have a collection of kimono pictures. I can share if you like.

I actually went to a studio in harajuku and dressed up as a maiko which was fun so then I just had to buy a kimono (yukata) which is black with white and grey flowers on it, the obi tying is something to definately practice when you have plenty of time

There exist pretied obi which tie up with hooks. Tying the obi is a complicated manoeuvre, even for the Japanese.

EbonyVampiria 10-26-2006 07:06 AM

yes indeed there were pretied ones but where is the fun in that lol when I want to wear it out I get my friend to do the obi tying which is much easier to be honest

Kimono is the formal dress, usually made of hemp, wool, or silk brocade. Kimono has a lining and is worn over an "under-kimono".

Yukata is a light summer kimono made of cotton worn with no underwear. It is also a favorite dress at Ryokan when getting out of the onsen.

And now... PICTURE! ^_^

windcat 10-26-2006 07:39 PM

Awesome pictures. I'm making a kimono/yukata for halloween (it's partially lined, will be worn with an under kimono and made of cotton, so I don't know what to call it, if anything) and I'll post the results when I'm done. It's actually a very easy beginner's project (if you can find patterns), so its a good alternative to buying one.

Difficult to run while wearing Kimono.

Oyo! It's a favorite for special events, such as the New Year visit to the Shinto temple and the "Coming-of-age" ceremony (when young people turn 20 years old, officially becoming adults who can buy alcohol and cigarettes).

NinjaKasumi123 10-26-2006 09:21 PM

EbonyVampiria 10-26-2006 09:58 PM

took most of the afternoon but was a great experience

Mochi 10-26-2006 11:27 PM

Obaa-chan gave my mother several silk kimonos and obis, but they're so expensive that we don't wear them. Instead, I wear yukata around the house. I have two: a red one with ume (plum trees) and a blue and white one with a pattern that resembles the star of David. Both are authentic, so I take very good care of them. ^.^

Tyzuma 10-27-2006 12:59 AM

Hey Is Ebony, black, she'd better not be white because Ebony means Black Woman. :#)

From around 40 000 yen to 70 000 yen for a brand new Furisode, not counting Obi and accessories. That's 4000 to 7000 dollars, roughly. The more expensive ones are made of silk brocade with weaved patterns and decorated with embroideries sewn by hand. Furisode are not mass-produced in big factories but are made by skilled craftsmen/women. It can take over a month to make one Furisode.

It's a matter of pride and prestige for girls to own a Furisode. If daddy isn't rich enough to buy her a new one, he can always buy a second-hand. They usually half the price and up. They usually have tears, stains, pinholes and other blemishes. You can get some on Ebay.

Avary_Ninja 10-29-2006 09:25 PM

Pinku!
