Allergies in Japanese - 01-23-2008, 08:48 AM

Ano~.

I know how to say allergy in Japanese... arerugi. Something like that. But how do you specify it?

How do you say, lactos intolerance? And cashew nuts? ^^ same as it sounds?

Appreciate your help.

For having some sort of meaning to this.

What do you have for allergy, and what is it called in Japanese?

Going to Japan in april!

Good questions. As you've said, "allergy" is アレルギー (arerugi-) in Japanese.

Lactose intolerance, I did not know, but according to various sources it's ラクトース不耐症 (I think it says rakuto-su futaishou > can someone confirm this?). Lactose can also be in expressed in Japanese as 乳糖 (nyuutou).

If you're allergic to cashews, I think you can just say カシューアレルギー (kashu- arerugi-). Likewise for an allergy to eggs -> 卵アレルギー(tamago arerugi-). Hope that helps

If you want to say you are allergic to something use に.

カシューアレルギー

I don't think my way particularly incorrect though, I have stumbled on phrases such as 私は卵アレルギーです and XXさんは卵アレルギーでした in text (I know, it sounds like "I'm an egg allergy", but I've encountered this fairly frequently). It's probably more colloquial.

I am sure that is alright too.

私は卵アレルギーです

私は卵にアレルギーがあります

But I probably wouldn't say:

私は卵アレルギーがあります

Though I am sure the meaning would be understood.

I have honestly never heard anyone using に in that way with アレルギー.
Everyone always says 何々アレルギー... Or 何々のアレルギー.

If anyone is trying to find me… Tamyuun on Instagram is probably the easiest.

Nyororin,

You are 100% correct. I just confirmed that. I had been saying it wrong for years. Sometimes I wish Japanese people would correct me more.

Thanks!
