How to say this in Japanese? - 11-30-2008, 02:03 AM

When you are giving a gift to someone (let's say, a box of chocolates), you may say something like "I hope you will like it/enjoy it". How to say this in Japanese?

Well, you're supposed to say something like (if I can remember correctly): Kore wa sukoshi desu ga" or something like that, meaning "This isn't much but..." I believe that is the polite way to give someone a gift.

Good question because we will never say it like you guys do!

We say 「つまらないものですが, 気(き)に入(い)っていただければ幸(さいわ)いで す。」, which roughly translates into "It's a rather boring thing, but I'd be happy if you found it enjoyable." Japanese humility at its best.

Come back if the other person is much younger or much older.

To someone younger, you can say:

「これ、少しだけど食べてみてね。気に入るといいけど ・・・」 = This isn't a lot. It'd be great if you liked it.

To someone much older, say something like:

「つまらない品で申し訳ないのですが、お口に合いまし たら幸いでございます。」 = I apologize for this to be a rather boring item, but I shall be happy if it fits your palate.

Thanks for answering me! These sentences will be really useful I believe.

These sentences are applied to chocolates (and food item), what if I wanna give out other gifts? (for eg: scarf)

Sorry for keep asking

「これ、プレゼント。使ってね。」 = for persons younger.

「これ、つまらないものですが、受け取ってください。 」 = for friends and equals

「これ、つまらないものですが、よろしければお使い下 さい。」 = for people older, your boss (even if he/she is younger), your teacher, etc.

Notice all my sample sentences in this thread so far are just samples. There are other ways to say these.

I didn't want to create a new topic because it'd be the same as this one so I'll just ask:

how do you write "Imposible is nothing" and "DON'T FEAR! GO FOR IT!"

thanks!!!
