20 Kanji a day - 06-02-2009, 02:31 AM

こんにちは (thanks again Nagoyankee)
Hey everyone. Due to the fact that I'm a lazy ass NEET (looking for a job) and the fact that I have an unnecessary amount of free time (spent doing worthless stuff like... watching anime...)
I'm a bit of a 引きこもり when i think about it...

I've decided to actually do something productive with my time.

The mission: Learn 20 Kanji every day
The goal: Learn all 1945 Joyo Kanji in about 100 days. (that adds up right?)

I am well aware that this is pretty much impossible, I don't have a super amazing photographic memory. And in all truth, I highly doubt I can remember the Joyo Kanji in 100 days. But I can and will study my 20 kanji every day. (I just don't guarantee I'll remember them a few days later.
Regardless of that fact, I still think this will be a valuable study, and a much better way to spend my time.

Anyways, I'm going to post the 20 kanji that I learn every day right here on this thread. If anyone wants, feel free to join me on this impossible journey. And if any of you Japanese Gurus spot any mistakes please feel free to point them out!

I hope this thread helps some people.

EDIT: decided to not post new kanji on the weekends. Gonna use that time to review all the kanji I've learned throughout the week.

EDIT 2: I've got a job, and I won't be able to keep this up anymore. Once I get my blog up and running I'll be posting 20 kanji a week on there. sorry for anyone who was following along.
Peace

ah, thanks Nagoyankee. I thought は was only read as "wa" when used as a particle. Guess that goes to show how much I know.
I appreciate you pointing that out for me though.

二=>ニ、ジ、ふた(つ)
三=>サン、ゾウ、み(つ)、み
六=>ロク、リク、む(つ)、むっ(つ)、むい
七=>シチ、ナナ、なな(つ)、なの
八=>ハチ、や(つ)、やっ(つ)、よう
十=>ジュウ、ジッ、ジュッ、とお、と (better learn to use hiragana, some words have the long o sound with おお and not おう).
円=>エン、まる(い)、まどか (there were other 2 reading, but I discarded since I couldn't find them used in internet...they might be used, but the source was not fully reliable ).
百=>ヒャク、ビャク、もも
万=>マン、バン、よろず
明=>メイ、ミョウ、ミン、あか(るい)、あか(るむ )、あか(らむ)、あか(り)、あか(す)、あき、あ き(らか)、あ(くる)、あ(く)、あ(ける)(I wrote all the ones I learnt so you can compare).
火=>カ、ひ、ほ

These are all the differences that I have found. I doubt you will find people who will correct you all 2000 kanji (they added more to the list, I think they go over 2000 now). Thus it will be up to you to do researches and pick the reading you find used around. As per me I learn them all I know some of them are not used much with that kanji, but I still learn them hee hee.

Kanji in Context (no link provided) and Essential Kanji (had to look up the title: Amazon.com: Essential Kanji: 2,000 Basic Japanese Characters Systematically Arranged For Learning And Reference: P. G. O'Neill: Books) are both good. I've used both with success.

Pair these with the flashcard program Anki (or Mnemosyne) and some writing practice.

Although I think you will likely forget almost every kanji if you keep up 20/day for very long unless you review constantly. And I do mean constantly. I think 25/week is doable (I kept it up for a while with minimal study until the lack of studying caught up with me after I'd acquired an additional 400 in the first half of a semester in Japan).

I've since lost the ability to read and write most of them through lack of usage. Cramming works if your goal is to hit a point of knowledge and you don't care about retention after that.

By all means, if you're living a pretty much fruitless existence as a hikikomori already, basically the only thing that could hurt would be bashing your head against the wall 24 hours a day. Go ahead and try to learn the kanji. I wish you luck.

20 kanji a day?? You might be more productive making that 20 kanji a week and then test yourself every day (or every second day).
