JLPT Level 3 - 11-21-2009, 10:03 PM

I am taking the JLPT level 3 exam in exactly 15 days. I only know level 4 grammar and vocab and about 150 Kanji. I'm a self-study student. The maximum i can study a day is about 2 hours. If i study hard for the next 15 days do you think i can pass it? I don't know any good grammar sites that focus specifically on JLPT grammar that explains instead of just giving examples. I can't switch to level 4 now so it's either pass or fail. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know how up to date this site is but go here:
JLPT Level 3 Study Page

Then look up the grammar in the list in either books (That is assuming you have grammar dictionaries or textbooks) or on other websites.

A couple of websites you might want to try looking up grammar on are:
Grammar Guide | Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese

JGram - The Japanese Grammar database
As far as I know the stuff on this site is user created, so be careful to read the comments on the grammar entries, just in case there are any mistakes in the examples etc.
There is also a JLPT level menu in the left hand side, but once again I think these levels are chosen by users so how accurate they are I don't know.

Japanese Verbs - Introduction and Table of Contents
Great site but it's downfall is that it's all in romaji

If you want more examples of vocab or grammar a good place to go is alc:
http://www.alc.co.jp/
Type an English or Japanese phrase or word into the search bar and hit the 英和・和英 button.

I have never taken a JLPT and if I ever do I will just aim straight for JLPT 1.
But, in my opinion the JLPT 3 stuff doesn't look complex or anything really, and from what I hear the JLPT doesn't test you on output, so having a lot of the grammar and vocab in your passive vocab I think would be ok.

Personally I think it's completely possible for you to learn all of that grammar in your time frame... Not to a point where you can use it all properly obviously, but at least to a point where you can mostly understand it when you see it.

If you haven't seen it yet look into Anki here:
Anki - friendly, intelligent flashcards

And create flashcard for things you want to remember.
Although I'm not sure how effective that will be over only 15 days.

No.

JLPT3 is a recommended 300 hours of study IIRC.

You need to learn 150 more kanji, and 700 new words. That's not counting the new grammar. 30 more hours of study is all you're willing/able to dedicate to Japanese? Stupid question. I am dumber for having read your post.

God, young people with their rap music and their "learn a language in 30 hours."

Oh... I missed the 2 hours part.
If you did 6 - 8 hours a day then I'd say you have a chance.
(Which btw is what I do with a full time job and having a social life... Just saying)

Out of interest, do you know what the recommended study in hours is for JLPT2?

That made me laugh! I got dirty looks from some co-workers but I could not help it. Thanks for making my day.

To the OP: I wish you the best of luck but I am afraid you will not pass. There is always next time though. It is too late to switch to level 4 but by this time next year, and with hard work, I am sure you can be ready for level 3!

^^; Thanks Yuriyuri. I'm sure i've exceeded 600 hours of study in my time and I'm not at JLPT2 yet. :< I'm not a slacker either; so just goes to show those estimates are kind of sketchy.

Either that or I'm dumb as a butt. *woe*
