~ga shimasu - 09-24-2010, 08:06 AM

Konnichiwa Minna san ,

I need help with "~ga shimasu" as I still do not understand the usage very well. Here are a few examples:

Koe ga shimasu.
(hear a sound)

Oto ga shimasu.
(hear a voice)

Aji ga shimasu.
(taste)

Nioi ga shimasu.
(smell)

Could someone kindly used the above sentences to make a few examples for my better understanding of "~ga shimasu" (with English translations). Below are the few sentences which I managed to come up with.

1.Genkan de koe ga shimasu. Dareka kita you desu.
(I hear a voice at the entrance. It seems that someone is here/someone came.)

2. Donna aji ga shimasu ka.
(How does it tastes?)

Sumomo no youna aji ga shimasu.
(It tastes like plum.)

3. Gasu no nioi ga shimasu.
(I can smell gas.)

Konnichiwa yuri san,

I did visit that site before but there are only a few examples there for what I am referring to.

So, are you just refering to 匂い, 味, 音 and 声?

If so:

That is more than a few examples.

Edit:
I just realised I mis-read your first post - I thought you wanted examples for がする in general.
But hopefully the above links should help anyway.

Thanks alot Yuri san. I should have key in 匂い, 味, 音, 声 instead of just ~がします。

Hi, I am curious to know why some of these sentences require "ような" and "の" while some do not.

taste like cigarettes

This dish has a unique taste.

This tastes like chicken.

This cake tastes awful

It tastes like an orange.

taste exactly the same

has the taste of a cigarette (lit. is doing cigarette's taste)

This tastes like chicken.
ような is equivalent to 'like' in this case. So in a) the taste is exactly that of a cigarette. In b) it's like chicken, but perhaps not exactly the same. One is a declaration, the other more of a comparison.
