In Japanese, the structure is
TIME + SUBJECT は(OPTIONAL I THINK...) PLACE + へ + VERB, etc.
So your sentence is basically correct. It just needs slight tweaking: 先週私は郵便局へ行きました。そして手紙を出した。
Just remember that へ comes after a place. Also, I'm not sure if you know about the -te form which could be used in your sentence. I think this is where I learned about it: te form

花鳥画は中国で始まって、唐朝の時代に日本へ入りまし た。
kachouga wa chuugoku de hajimatte, touchou no jidai ni nihon e hairimashita.

Flower-bird paintings started in China and entered Japan during the Tang Dynasty. (Hope that makes sense ^^)

I studied Spanish briefly but my Spanish is bad.

Mijikaku watashi wa SUPEIN go o gakushuu shimashita ga watashi no SUPEIN go wa ii janai.

I really think this is way off. ^^;;;

Anyway, I pass on...討つ (うつ) which means "to avenge".

lol my japanese isnt as good as it should be
i learnt it through almost a whole year of repeatedly sending emails to a few different friends from japan, as if we we're having an msn convo lol
actually i think it was more than a year
on top of that, when i had spare time (yeh i had heaps back in the junior high days), i used to listen to songs and try to write out the lyrics by ear, and then finding a translation on the internet and learning new words from each song

watashi ha supeingo wo sukoshi benkyou shimashita ga, madamada (jyouzu janai // umakunai) desu

i dont think i can really explain it that well though

ive never heard of 討つ as avenge.... but ill give it a shot lol

I wrote two sentences (with almost the same words) that mean the same thing (i think) b/c I wasn't sure which one made more sense... Can someone shed some light on this?

夏休みはちょっとだけもっと長いであればいいんだけど 。
natsuyasumi wa chotto dake motto nagai deareba iin dakedo.

夏休みはもう少し長いであればいいんだけど。
natsuyasumi wa mou sukoshi nagai deareba iin dakedo.

If only summer vacation were longer...

I don't have too much trouble if I choose the words, but trying to make sentences with words or phrases I've never seen is tough. That just shows I need a whole lot more practice.

It does make more sense, looking at it, but, there's no "mijikaku" in the sentence for "briefly". How would I have used that?

I'll answer that.
82riceballs correctly used 少し　"sukoshi" to give the meaning "for a small amout of time". 短い is used more when talking about physical lenght (as when talking about hair, roads, compositions, etc.), or in composites such as 短い時間 (short period of time) or 短い間に (in a short time). You could use these forms in your sentence, as in
私はスペイン語を短い時間で勉強しました。
meaning "I studied spanish in a short time".

The best translation for "briefly" is indeed "しばらく".
