Avalon (2001). At least Japanese-directed and produced by the one of a kind Mamoru Oshii.

Most people would not agree with that, probably, and would consider that film to be mediocre. And in this I'm splitting apart animation from live action. I consider this question as only live action.

"Love Exposure" directed by Shion Sono. Never before have I been exposed to a movie that focused on family, religion, love, pervertedness, and manipulation all in one serving. The way that all of these subjects were interconnected with each other while still maintaining focus on "love" was truly astonishing. Not to mention I fell in love with Yoko (Hikari Mitsushima), beautiful, tenacious, and overall desirable. I wish Yoko were my "Maria" .

I was hoping the live action version of Blood: The Last Vampire was going to be awesome, but it wasn't.

I have seen many Japanese movies. i really like movies from Ghibli studios.
Last year i started to watch more down to earth type movies and the one movie caught my eye was "Flavor of happiness". I really enjoy this movie.

Battle Royale, though the book was better.

I know it is not a Japanese film, but it is set in Japan, I really like Lost in Translation, very funny.
Also, Battle Royale two was a massive let down, not a scratch on the original! I was so disappointed by it; the film had me crying into my cereals the day after.

Please read my diary that I wrote when travelling and working in Japan for three months. It is also packed full of information. I hope that it can inspire you to have an adventure too.
Please contact me if I can help you with advice or information.

Here's a trailer from the best Japanese movie!

PS: I haven't seen the movie, but the trailer itself kicks ass to all the movies mentioned above.

As of thsi weekend I have a new favorite.
"Dreams" by Akira Kurosawa.

I had seen it before, but watching it again while the weather went from a sunny 75 F to rain to a snowy 34 F over the course of a day made the 1st dream of the sequence even more powerful.

I suppose I had not been in such a tranquil / observant state of mind before, because this is the first time I also noticed how the collection of dreams presents such a wide variety of images of Japan and it's culture. Though they are tied together loosely, each is its own classic and sometimes very different image.

Only an open mind and open heart can be filled with life.
