I often shoot in black and white because it captures and shows light and shadow in ways which color can't do, and black and white film has far more exposure latitude than color film (or digital). In the case of these photos, the day was bright and sunny, had I used color film (or even color digital) I would have lost a lot of detail in the shadows. With black and white film I can over expose by a stop or so, which allows areas in the shade (like the woman dancer's face) to show up, while not having the brighter, sunlit areas blown out.
