The word "manga" means comics in Japanese. That's all.

The word "kuruma" means car in Japanese. I couldn't say "You know what, I'm not going to build a car, I'm going to build a kuruma."

It doesn't bother me that people are influenced and excited by the ton of manga available in English today. Quite the contrary. I think it's terrific.

My feeling is that when non-Japanese say they want to make manga, it's a disservice to Japanese manga because it implies that manga is a genre. Manga isn't a genre, it's a medium.

I see what you're saying but it american and japanese may be different yet it can at times show interesting traits like history and several other things like would it not. I mean show you things to people have interest of the countries right

I am not sure if I quite understand what you are trying to say. Manga and comics certainly can show interesting historical and cultural insights. That's another reason why I think it is confusing when non-Japanese call their work "manga".

"I see a minor difference between manga and comics. Yes, Manga may be Japanese comics, but there is a difference between Japanese comics and American comics. American comics look a little bit more realistic, and they do seem to be in color most of the time. Japanese manga is mostly in black and white."

Totally From My friend ^w^!! :rheart:

Totally Took the words from my mouth Mmhmm

There is a lot more going on than just color and black and white.

There are plenty of American comics in black and white. There are also plenty of American comics that aren't "realistic-looking" and plenty of Japanese comics that are.

Manga is a medium, it's the art of Japanese storytelling in comic form. Saying "I want to be a manga artist" is the same as saying "I want to be a French filmmaker." You can be inspired by French film. You can be influenced by French film. You can love French film. But unless you're French, you aren't going to be a French filmmaker.

I think so, yes. I didn't say there was anything WRONG with making comics that are inspired and influenced by manga. I think people SHOULD do that. I think it is awesome that Megatokyo is going to be published in Japan. I think we should get more manga in the US, and I wish Japanese were more interested in American comics in their original forms, and not just the big-budget movies.
