Japanese Styles/Trends

I know about the styles Lolita and Ganguro, but I don't know any other Japanese styles.

So can anyone show me some other Japanese styles/trends??

Thank you everyone!

allie2590 05-28-2008 08:27 PM

I love lolita, but that ganguro really hurt my eyes...

daihoshi 05-28-2008 08:29 PM

yeah, i know. lol! do you think they were trying for a malibu barbie look?

MissMisa 05-28-2008 08:34 PM

Decora

CaraHime 05-28-2008 10:59 PM

Those Ganguro pictures are really old and outdated. Now Ganguro is a lot classier and the make isn't as heavy.
Oh, and the "Gothic Lolitas" that you posted are more on the punk side.
Just so you know. <3

Nagoyankee 05-28-2008 11:10 PM

Ganguro is definitely out. Lolita-kei is still pretty much in. Decora might grow fairly big this year.

I'm amazed by the large number of Caucasian Lolita girls seen in Harajuku these days. Most of them look very nice. But I nearly fainted when I saw a 6-footer Lolita there a few weeks ago.

sasuke91 05-28-2008 11:23 PM

Visual Kei!

So, is Visual Kei just a style for J-Rockers, or is it a style you see on the streets? I don't really see things that are really all that similar in these pictures, either.
Can anyone explain this to me??

They all look pretty lacey and girly...but so does Lolita.

Ah, thank you. As weird as the Gangura pictures are, I wouldn't have minded if that was a style. It's no worse than hardcore punks over here. =P

Punk Lolita? What are the major differences between Punk and Gothic?

daihoshi 05-29-2008 12:45 AM

Is Decora just a truck load of jewelry and hair clips?? Or is there more to it.
And thank you for the pictures, MissMisa.

MMM 05-29-2008 12:48 AM

This must be the most popular trend in Japan

SALARYMAN

daihoshi 05-29-2008 01:05 AM

Lol! I like it. It's a sexxi twist on business man, and sex slave. ;P

Haha! Just kidding. Sorry if this offends anyone.

Wow, yeah.
I dress the Decora style every day, or just wear cat ears with a fluffly skirt!
Lots of jewlery and hair clips. But I think the Ganguro style is a little too over the top... ^^;
I bet they're nice girls though, that like to have fun! <3

Ganguro is still a style, it's just a lot different. I think that the only thing that's the same is the tan. If you want to learn more about Ganguro or other forms of Gyaru, I would suggest looking at Ricoche since it's filled with Gals.

Gothic Lolita is like any other form of Lolita but with darker color schemes and imagery on the prints. For example, rather than like scones and puppies it would have, say, the ever-popular iron gate print.
Punk Lolita doesn't have the strict rules and guidelines very thoroughly applied. It's what you'd expect from anything with Punk in the name--tattered clothes, chains, skulls, etc etc. Also, The make tends to be thicker and darker and the hair short, androgynous, VK-like cuts.

daihoshi 06-01-2008 03:16 PM

Thank you CaraHime. I still hadn't really figured out the difference. =P
And I looked up Gyaru, and it does look like they tamed the make up down a bit. Lol!
Thanks again!!

HAHA! Thats becoming a trend here too, though rarely with the suit coat on and primarily in the afternoons.
I have my own version of it with the mouth closed, glass on my head and my chin dipped forward. However, being the iconoclast I buck the local trend by sleeping in the morning on the way in to work.

xYinniex 06-01-2008 08:16 PM

shibuya girls

they have a style don't they?
they're quite...preppy-ish.

CaraHime 06-02-2008 12:26 AM

By Shibuya girls you, of course, mean Gyaru, right? I agree that a lot of stuff is a little on the preppy side. It's only natural that they would share some elements since Gyaru came from Japanese girls copying California girls. A good example of this would be Uggs. (-shudders-)
However, some looks, such as Haady Gyaru, are totally different. Haady Gyaru looks more like a Gyaru manifestation of Scene, in my opinion. Manba, Banba, and Himegyaru are a few styles that you could never tie preppy fashion to.

I would post pictures, but I don't feel like it at the moment.

OSHARE KEI

Ayriel 06-02-2008 07:55 PM

Ruder o.o!

and kodona x3

daihoshi 06-04-2008 10:54 PM

Wow, all these styles you all have posted are really interesting. I've never seen a lot of them, but my favorite styles so far that I've seen would probably have to be Oshare Kei and Ruder.

crazyjrockluver 06-06-2008 07:16 PM

 i adore the lolita style but the other one just isn't me, i also love harajuku fashion too

allie2590 06-06-2008 07:44 PM

I have to admit, I love the kodona. :D

Soup045 06-16-2008 12:23 AM

I love several different Japanese Fashion styles...Lolita, Decora, Kigurumi, Ganguro, Kogal, Oshare Kei, Visual Kei, etc.

About Ganguro and Kogal, I like the style, just not the tan and the make-up. But they're clothes are fresh and and cool! Egg and Ranzuki magazines are really getting better with Ganguro/Kogal fashion!

Lol
That's adorable.

You guys do realize there's more to the style scene in Japan rather then just the eccentrics?

I'd say this site is pretty damn accurate to the majority of what people where in Japan aside from MMM's post.

This style is called FRUiTS, I don't think it's very well known though

Mom3n7uM00 07-02-2008 02:59 PM

I actually dont find Yamanba (Ganguro) style all that bad, Those pictures are of extreme ganguro but now its a bit toned down imo.

+lol, I had a girlfriend once that was Yamanba, she was obsessed with money ;__;

Right now the more mainstream fashions for girls in Japan are...

:rheart: Long flowing skirts (some can also be pulled higher up and worn as dresses) with a very small denim (or other colour) waistcoat/jacket over it

:rheart: An oversized t-shirt with a bold logo/big Engrish words and colours, with a short frilly skirt under it (very cute!)

:rheart: Checkered shirt-type dresses (hard to explain but I bought one yesterday so I'll try to post a pic later) worn with these strappy brown sandals which sometimes have straps going quite far up the leg

:rheart: Cute flowing blouses (some with flower patterns) worn with mini denim shorts

And more! And of course the high heels that about 98% of girls seem to wear...
I'm seeing these fashions all over Tokyo right now (especially the 3rd one) and I saw them in a recent non-no issue. Such cute summer fashion :D

I'll try and post some pics later!;)

mangapunkrocker 07-13-2008 05:52 PM

HUGE question. HOw much do these clothes cost? are there any website that have them cheap? How come there aren't any people from the U.S dressed like that in the pics? does anybody have themselves dressed up in lolita wear?
