Try and get him to watch My Neighbor Totoro, if he doesn't like that he's a lost cause

I've loved Japanese stories and animation since I was a kid. Something draws me to them, the amount of philsophy and character development or something. All my friends used to think I was a bit eccentric for doing so. (and probably for other reasons.) Its just in the past 3 years that Anime has really taken off here. Almost all students know about Naruto, Bleach and movies like Spirited Away etc. My friends are the same, whereas before they were skepitcal of shows like DragonBall Z and Trigun, now they're in love with them.
Its really human nature. People either are open to something, or totally against it because they're ignorant and prejudiced.
Don't take it personally.

Yeah, I'm getting sick of that. But I wonder how Japanese people make fun of Americans???

The ones that really bend my wire are are those that think that any adult (18+) that watch anime are watching pornogaphy! My friends and I (all around the U.S. and most not Japanese) love watching the stories and characters unfold in the anime movies. We are all vocal about our enjoyment of anime and anyone that does not like it I tell them that they "do not have to watch it, just do not judge me on something you are ignorant about". And I usually emphasize the word "ignorant" for them to understand better.

I agree with this. There is this belief that anime goes from kid stuff straight to hard-core porno. There is a LOT of good stuff in between!

Hmm...
I live in South Texas and can't say that I've ever had a problem with people being discriminating against Japan or Anime. I have even met a couple of friends because they also liked Anime, a few that really suprissed me by the fact that they liked Anime. Anyway I havn't seen that problem too much.

I hate it when people make fun of me for watching "cartoons". Heck, I don't even consider anime a cartoon. It is in an entirely different league. I agree with all of you.

Discrimination is going on all over the world. Not even just about anime and manga, but towards other people and cultures. I know you're sick of it, but just don't worry about it. There'll be many people who think that way.

Thanks for reading!
