The reason I asked was that, since you had used commas, I thought you were thinking about the "subordinate and main clauses", which don't exist in those sentences.

愛子：田中はいますか。

山田：いいえ、いません。田中が学校へ行きました。

Can't use が there for any reason. For a plain "Someone does/did something", it's always は.
