Smile I need help with translation - 06-26-2011, 03:52 PM

Hello everyone : )
I would like to have your help with translating the following letter. It is for my Japanese professor. He accepted me as a research intern in his laboratory this summer and I want to design a bookmark for him with this text on it:

I was enlightened by your readings, knowledge, and kindness
I feel proud to be taught by you
and I thank you very much

This is Google translation and I really know nothing about Japanese.
私はあなたの読書によって啓発された
知識と優しさ
私はあなたが教えたことを誇りに感じる
私はどうもありがとうございました

I appreciate your help and suggestions ,,
Thank you very much

Hi.
In your context (situation), the Google translation might not be proper.
Here is my suggestion;

私はあなたの書物、知識、そして配慮に深く感銘いたし ました。
あなたの教えを請うことができ大変光栄です。
このたびは誠にありがとうございました。

These texts are well translated into Japanese, but there's one thing I'd like to make a point.

I think ”enlightened” doesn't strictly mean "deeply impressed or 深く感銘する in Japanese." It actually means that you give someone some information so that they can understand more about it.

It seems to me that "啓発されました” is more faithful to the meaning of the sentence.
This doesn't mean, of course, that I am right, but that's just my two cents. If I am wrong, your correction would be greatly appreciated.

----------------
感銘 (Impress)
[名] 忘れられないほど深く感動すること。心に深く刻みつけ て忘れないこと。「深い―を受ける」「お話にいたく― しました」

啓発 (Enlighten)
[名] 人が気づかずにいるところを教え示して、より高い認識 ・理解に導くこと。「彼の意見には―された」「自己― 」

Do you ever call your professor あなた? I never have and never will.

Your Japanese proficiency shall be in direct proportion
to your true interest in the Japanese Mind.

Well, I know nothing but I trust you and I’m going to copy it.
Thank you all for your help….. : )
I am Arabic native speaker and I loved and enjoyed learning English. The transition from Arabic to English is very smooth. Believe it or not the two languages share many things.
I am planning to continue my education in Japan but Japanese sounds very difficult to me.
Once again thank you

As a native Japanese, I feel very strange or uncomfortable with the expression "あなたの教えを請うことができ大変光栄です。".

"教えを請う" means "to ask/beg for teaching". Is it suitable for this case?

I rather recommend "あなたに師事できて光栄です".

And I do not recommend to use the message composed by native Japanese. YOu should make the book mark by your own (Japanese) words.

Or, Just write down "ありがとうございます。" by your hand writing (practiced very much).

Language makes Culture and Culture makes Language.
