Hmm... well i guess it could serve as a motivation for newcomers to do a little research before posting. And screen out those who have nothing serious to ask/say... though i do remember stumbling across several of these kind of forums and i just went to a different place, since i needed the help only on my particular question (which was nowhere covered in the existing threads) and was not willing to engage in-to post count boosting (spamming)... so yeah... it's just another of those rarely found sticks that has two ends.
The meaning of life is to give life meaning.

I agree....most newcomers start a new thread without even bothering to research if their question can be answered in some thread that had already been started. There should be a post count limit for starting a thread. |

An IP ban is a useless tactic. It is not hard at all to acquire a new IP address within a few minutes with most internet connections, because they are dynamically assigned.

A lot of spam is also from automated bots, posting the same thing over and over, and they usually have jiggy names. These could EASILY be stopped by implementing Captcha [those random letters and numbers] on Login. It takes a second to type and bots can't read it.

The recent problem hasn't been creating new topics though - it has been spamming on old ones. ![]() |

This sort of talk has come up before - I suggested moderating the first few posts.

I think the best solutions given until now are:
Make the new members wait 24 hours for their first post or thread. Ban the spammers by IP. Use reCAPTCHA on the log in. Although, each one of them does not work well alone, they together may slow down and make the "work" of the spammers more difficult. About make the members wait between post new threads, I think it will not work to stop the spam, because the spammers often post on already existing threads, rather than post a new one. It will only help to stop the newbie posters to write unnecessary threads, but it isn't the subject of this thread. PS.: But all of this suggestions are useless if ShinjukuEki (he's too busy or lazy, like Excessum said) does not come online, so maybe a more active administrator should work too. |
