Western Rock vs JRock

Ok I hope this kind of thread hasn't been made already... and I actually searched but the search list is @_@... needs days to be checked.

So yeah, which do you prefer, Western Rock (American and Europe Bands) or JRock bands. I clearly see some people here have come due to their love of Japanese music while some others not. And it's a great debate.

I'd love to see videos of JRock music as well, examples why it's better, as I don
t have much knowledge of how it is (I've checked only big artists like Miyavi and such).

Oh and this includes all subgenres (metal, punk, even emo) etc. for both rock and jrock.

peterv20 12-24-2008 12:44 AM

punk rules

i have to vote for western rock because of it's origins.but i very much respect the love and talent of j-rockers!!!!!

CarleyGee 12-24-2008 12:50 AM

Western Rock.

Keaton421 12-24-2008 12:53 AM

There's some good Jmusic, but not really good rock.

The West has Chuck Berry, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones... and that's just a small selection from only my music folder, and that's just the Classic Rock genre!

Arikado 12-24-2008 12:55 AM

I'll take my DragonForce and Blind Guardian over J-rock ;] But there is some good J-rock out there.

PockyMePink 12-24-2008 01:02 AM

I've never been able to listen to western rock. Ever! Gah, it's so.....wait

I'd rather not bash it, that would be rude and thoughtless. However, I'd pick JRock over western rock anyday.

SHAD0W 12-24-2008 01:03 AM

Rock music for the win!

iPhantom 12-24-2008 01:20 AM

mhm... I agree that old western rock has music that will never and ever be replaced. How about current rock or especially newcomers...

Keaton421 12-24-2008 01:24 AM

For modern rock, the ball's still in the West's court. I mean, we've got Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Interpol, The White Stripes, The Cure, and a really thriving Indie scene.

AnimeBaby112 12-24-2008 01:25 AM

I like both. I like J-rock a little more because it's different than what I am used to, plus I love the Japanese language.

If the ball were in the Western court, wouldn't that mean we would be on the defense? D:

Hahahah, I kid, I kid. I'm particularly supporting Western rock because of all of the great metal groups that have emerged (and re-emerged) in this decade that have seriously rocked my socks. I mean, totally blown me away. Enough to rethink my standards on the genre.

Hahaha. There's a lot of good metal, I'm a huge fan of Mastodon and Tool. Also, Punk rock was born and died in the West.

Same here, love them <33

After Western rock, half the other stuff just doesn't measure up.

VitalStatistic 12-24-2008 01:37 AM

I like both.

But Jrock wins.

xYinniex 12-24-2008 01:38 AM

Def Leppard, Poison, Whitesnake, oh jeez. They were Visual kei before there was Visual kei :D

clairebear 12-24-2008 02:13 AM

There's not many good Rock bands out there that I'd be interested in, so I guess I prefer Jrock.

Tordek42 12-24-2008 02:29 AM

Well the only Western rock I listen to is Classic/Prog Rock, so Pink Floyd etc.

Everything I listen to is JRock/JPop etc, so I picked JRock

I have to got wit jrock

Crani 12-24-2008 03:20 AM

J-rock is basically the Japanese version of Western rock. They just copy what as been done in the West and don't bring anything new to the game.
Visual Key is Glam Metal J-version. Norifumi Shima is Ywngie Malmsteen J-version. Akira Takasaki is Van Halen J-version. So I go with Western Rock, although there are some good japanese bands.

eh, everything has it's roots in something. But JRock has branched out, and now the difference between JRock and western rock are pretty signifigant.

tocrayzay 12-24-2008 03:25 AM

I'd have to say western rock, although I do listen to both and right now
and @Keaton great taste in music!!!

reihiino 12-24-2008 03:35 AM

Brought up on western rock but startin to like Jrock as of late.

MissHoneyBeeee 12-24-2008 03:39 AM

jrock

mostly cuz that's the majority of what i listen to nowadays, but i still like rock (mostly cuz i don't hav jrock CD's to listen to when i'm offline)

if i had to name my top 5 (or top 10) it would completely consist of jrock musicians. no joke.

Miyavifan 12-24-2008 04:12 AM

I used to be really into Western rock.
Now I like Jrock. It's, to me, much more interesting than Western rock.

superheel 12-24-2008 04:14 AM

Western Rock. JRock is not my thing.

I totally agree. I wish there was a Japanese radio station.

I listen to mainly Japanese music now, with a smidge of German music thrown in. and some in English. (that would be Cinema Bizarre. I know they're German, but I count it as English cause Strify sings in English)

Almazing1000 12-24-2008 04:32 AM

I prefer Rock Specifically Indie Rock... The Devil Wears Prada is a nice band. You can literally listen to any Sub-Category of Western rock at anytime while in any mood. Getting ready for a football game? -> Heavy Metal Just went through a bad break up? -> Power Ballads. I saw DragonForce they're bad ass, Journey is pretty good, Rush "Tom Sawyer" is the sh*t!! Plus when I play Guitar Hero I like songs that everyone can sing a long to. You can't play "Thunder Strike" (a drinking game) with JRock

You just have to look closer.

Arikado 12-24-2008 04:49 AM

There are also good J-rock groups out there, you just have to look closer...a lot closer ;]

Eh, J-rock just isn't my style, I prefer Western.
I tried listening to J-rock to see what everybody
was getting worked up about, but I couldn't
really get into it.

I guess it's a you-like-it or not kind of thing.

Arikado 12-24-2008 05:00 AM

To me, East Asian rock has a totally different feel altogether from anything else. The melodies are more emotional and epic in a certain way.

DragonForce has tainted my taste for music, though. Now that is some epic, uplifting stuff. My standards have shot way up, and all metal has become "DragonForce half-assed," hahahahah. :D

Yeah, it's totally different so maybe it's not right to compare JRock to Western Rock. I mean, not all people like guys who look like girls, wears heavy make up and of course, listen to lyrics they cant understand. Well, I respect JRock, their melodies are so emotional and something you don't hear in western bands.

Speaking of east Asian Rock, you should try and listen to Filipino Rock, they are not bad and most of their songs are english.

It's funny though how Western Rockers can wear makeup
but they don't look like girls, like a lot of J Rockers can...
Maybe it's facial features or so... but that's only generalizing.

Sutiiven 12-24-2008 06:03 AM

J Rock is like ok but why listen to something you dont what they are saying.Bands like Slipknot,Amon Amarth, Behemoth, King Diamond, Satyricon , Emperor,Rotting Christ,Dark Funeral and Celtic Frost are more my style same for others.

Since they are more powerful then J Rock

I don't think I even tried 20 bands... haha.

AmbeRz 12-24-2008 06:21 AM

I like Western rock because its well...more "normal" than Jrock I guess. Jrock has a unique sound and I hate that I can't understand what the song is about since my Japanese skills are non-existant. I like J-rock too though, and not just because the bands are better looking. :p

I can't really choose what I like better.
