Housing in Wasabijuice's "Real Japan" - 10-07-2009, 05:01 PM

"In the real Japan you can buy a house for a few thousand dollars! You can rent a house for a free or almost free."

^This part of Wasabijuice's post on rural Japan intrigued me to say the least. Can anyone point me in the right direction if I wanted to purchase a house like this? It sounds too good to be true..."no cops, no rangers, no rules"..his words not mine.

I made another thread about getting a warehouse in Japan so I could play drums without disturbing anyone, and a very helpful board member informed me that I was right about the zoning laws but it's very expensive to rent commericial property. If I could get a cheap property in rural Japan and build a sound proof room to practice in that would be awesome.

Does anyone know of any rural areas near enough to Osaka that you could commute there in one day where one can purchase property? How remote are these areas? Can you buy homes that are off in the distance without neighbors or anything? It'd be rad to have a cool little house off in country side where I could jam all night with friends and stuff.

A lot of questions I know. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Basically my situation is I'm 22, I've got $50,000 in the bank (I worked my $%# off for it I'm not some trust fund kid), I just graduated college with a degree in English and I want to permanently move to Japan and teach English, in or in this case, near Osaka. The reason being all of my friends in Japan live in Osaka and I'm really into the underground music scene there. btw any board members here listen to Japanese experimental rock gods Boredoms? If not you should, if you can handle lots of feedback and sun worship.

You can commute from Hokkaido or Kyushu to Osaka in one day. You can be in the remote countryside from downtown Osaka in less than an hour.

I saw the Boredoms a couple times in Japan...great stuff.

Dude then you know what I'm talking about!! So obsessed with that band.

I'll do some research on Hokkaido and Kyushu. Thanks for the heads up.

Do you know of any places to live in the country side just outside of Osaka you mentioned? The three times I've been to Japan I was pretty much just holed up in a studio jamming with people in Osaka/going to shows so I'm not sure whats really going on outside of the metropolis.

Anyone else with advice feel free to contribute I'd greatly appreciate it! I love this forum.

My point is that Hokkaido (far north) and Kyushu (far south) are within a day's commute to Osaka.

Tenri, Nara is about an hour out of Osaka by train and there is a lot of countryside around there.

Any opinion on Wasabijuice's claim of homes being that cheap?

I was looking at this village:

okay n/m
sorry about the double post.

i was just reading a thread on gaijinpot and this one person posted:

"I just rented an 8 bedroom, 3 car garage, 2 rice fields, and right next to a river property for 10,000 yen a month! Most of the houses here are from grandparents that have died and the family doesn't sell them and just leaves them! Most real estate agencies will have apartment listings and some houses in the rural areas but won't have these kind of listings.
These houses come in all forms, sizes, and quality! What I did for a month was just cruise around and explore for these houses and talk with the neighbors! There are a TONS of these houses and the people I have talked to gave me the option to buy them too cause they never use them!! But these places are SUPER rural!
Good luck!"

you have got to be kidding me. that is ridiculous.

i mean that just doesn't sound real. that sounds like some spam e-mail you would get and disregard. sounds too good to be true but, isnt? it's for real?

i'm so happy right now

It is true that more younger generations move to the city, so when old folks die there is really no one to replace them in their home. Japan has a reputation for tiny homes, but that is really just in urban and suburban areas. I have been to homes in the country that are as big as castles with entire wings that go unused. So this is plausible to me, thought 10,000 a month seems rather cheap.

You can find cheap here:
Japan Real Estate

50,000 dollars should get you a house to jam away in. I don't know if anyone will want to come out to the countryside to jam with you tho

Go to Google maps, hit Osaka, and then change to satellite view. You can more easily see which areas are more rural.

I don't know about renting. I guess if you bang on enough doors, someone will eventually help you with a cheap place. Eventually.
